As the title says we are heading towards a bigger family in a couple months. Current 2012 T3 TDI is the finest vehicle I have owned but it will be a seat short.

Is the Q7 with the 3rd row a good option? Is that 3rd row okay for youngins?

Are all of your kids in car seats or boosters? The Q7 is one of the few vehicles you will find lower latch points for every seat. Now 5 point harness car seats have you switch to the lap belt to secure the seats once the kids are over 40 lbs, but at that size you can move to a booster seat and they use the lap/shoulder belt on the child and lower latch attachments to secure the seat in place. That give you a lot of seat placement options, however when I switched my 5 year old from 5 point to booster he cannot quite buckle himself now, where before he could clip all the buckles of the 5 point together, pull the strap to tighten and then just a tug from me to fully tighten. With the booster I can't reach to help buckle the lap/shoulder. So whoever is in the 3rd row need to be totally self sufficient to buckle themselves. The other issue is very little room behind the 3rd row of any of those vehicles, about 1/2 or 1/3 of what you're used too. We only have 3 kids so we went from Mercedes GLC to a VW Atlas. The Atlas has captains chairs on the second row and we regretted every second of that, as we would have been better off with 3 kids across the 2nd row and leave the 3rd row down for space (you know all the junk you carry around for a day trip or weekend away with the kids). We want to replace our Atlas with a Q7 or XC90 when the time comes and put the kids 3 across. If you are buying one of these with the intent of using the 3rd row because you have 4 kids, I would not even look in this class. I would go right to an Expedition Max or Suburban. I traded my Touareg for an F150 crew cab and love the space. If we had 4 kids I would have gone Expedition Max or maybe even Wagoneer L. I also would not recommend a minivan like so many people do, they also have useless space behind the 3rd row.

It will be 3 kids. 11, 4 and newborn. I was thinking the two car seats in the middle seat, 11 year old in the back.

We log a lot of miles and also tow a 3k trailer regularly. I prefer the Touareg TDI having moved to it from an Escalade ESV. With the Escalade we had captains + tons of room in back.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback.

From my experience 3 kids fit fine is Touareg, 2 adults and 1 kid, or 1 adult, 1 kid and 1 dog, even 3 adults also will fit fine in the back seat of a Touareg. On a short trip I even fit 3 kids plus an adult on the back seat.
And my dog’s carseat fits well on front passenger seat.

I know we Brits just aren't as big as the average American, but I routinely take three grown adults in winter outdoor clothing in the back when our group goes out on a birdwatching trip, up to 400 miles in a day.

It's not been necessary for some time but we used baby/child seats which attached to the adult seat belts rather than use the ISOFIX attachments.

Rear hatch space is where the Q7 will shine

Q7 will be a nice upgrade for space in your situation. 11 year old will likely opt for the 3rd row 100% of the time and would be good age to manage flipping the 2nd row seat to get back there. And you can fit all 3 in 2nd row if you need the extra cargo space for a few strollers, etc...

No TDI in the 2017 plus is fine, stick with the supercharged 3.0 and never look back

I'll stick with my 20MPG while towing 6000lbs and the torque to not even notice I am towing anything up hills. I have a buddy that goes to the track with me in his 2017 Q7, he gets about 12MPG. When we go on long trips I just tell him we'll meet him there, don't feel like stopping constantly. LOL On a 6 hour trip he uses 14 gallons of fuel more than me....each way. Even on our short haul 2 hour trips he's using 4 gallons more one way, adds up.

I towed with a gasser ONCE back in 1998. Never........again......

Chiming back in... as someone who has more miles than most pulling trailers I would not mind a gasser for occasional pulls but scoff at the idea for the amount of towing I do. Our current trailer is a little bumper pull and the Touareg or Q7 TDI would be fine for it. If I were to go to something of 5k or more weight I would also plan on getting a 3/4 ton or larger pickup.

It is one thing to pull something it is another to stop it in a panic situation.

Our Escalade had a long enough wheel base that I was comfortable pulling a 7k trailer but the single digit fuel economy and extra rpm, wear and tear, and overall "pushing to the maximum" would not work long term.

Just my two cents.

Some of the posts are really funny around here!
There's so much more that goes into determining tow capacity than just HP\TQ ratings..... imagine if there were more pieces to the puzzle... such as axle ratings, available gear ratios, tire ratings, brake systems, wheelbase, aero, etc......

Tunnel vision is strong around here!

Yep all of those matter too.
