My exhaust system warning light just came on. :anger: Seems to be driving OK. I guess I'll take it in tomorrow to see if they can figure out what the problem is. Anyone else have this happen??

Thanks....

You mean the 'engine' lamp for which the manual says check exhaust etc? This lights when the exhaust gases are not normal. Cause: anything that may affect the combustion procedure. Mine turned on once, after dealer washed the engine with pressurized water and shorted the ignition plugs. At idle, do you see unburned fuel dripping off the exhaust pipe?

Did you have oil changed or added oil recently? Overfilling may cause this. Bad quality fuel might also foul the sensors.

My opinion? Verify that your car is hasn't lost water or oil and drive the shortest distance possible directly towards dealership. Do not increase rpm beyond 2,500-3000 I would say.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply. The dealer was very good about getting the car in right away. They said that if the light wasn't blinking then it shouldn't be anything to worry about. They found a small leak in the evap. system. They rechecked it and said that everything was OK. The service guy said that this could occur from a loose gas cap or any number of minor things. I frankly don't understand it all, but all seems to be OK now.

Dealership unable to diagnose & treat EVAP problems

Last Thursday (eight days ago) I took my V6 TReg to my dealership for a 10K service. The check engine light was on and I brought that to their attention. Turns out they had to keep the car to diagnose the problem (so they rented me a car from Enterprise). First the service people coudn't understand what the code generated by the warning light meant. To get that info they had to call in a VW technician who wasn't even able to get in to look at the car until this Monday. When he did get there the machine they needed was unavailable. Finally the car was diagnosed with an EVAP leak. Yesterday (1 week later) when I stopped by they told me they were trying to find the leak and had no idea when the car would be done. Today I called and the service manager said he was putting a call into a VW regional manager or something, and that my car would not be ready today. Net result, I have been w/o my TReg for over a week and I have no idea when I will be getting it back. So much for my weekend road trip.

To add insult to injury, aside from the first day, nobody at the service center took the initiative to call me to keep me posted. Rather, I had to call them twice a day -- first to check status in the early afternoon and request a call back later in the day, and second to get a status since my call was never returned. One day I called and seemingly no work had been done on the car that day at all -- it just fell through the cracks!

All in all it makes me uneasy to have paid all this money for a new car and having to: 1) be dealing with this stuff so early, and 2) the service centers apparent complete lack of customer service skills. I mean, outside of the Phaeton (which I haven't seen too many of on the road), the TReg is VW's highest end car. Shouldn't it's owners be treated accordingly? Mind you, I don't blame the car -- love it -- I just think the service infrastructure at my dealership isn't quite ready to handle Touareg problems.

I would bet your problem turns out to be a loose gas cap..... nothing major.

I would be kinda pissed if it was the gas cap. I think they're using a emmissons testing machine and it's still indicating a leak. But then, what do I know.

So finally the service center was able to find the source of the leak -- the gas tank. Turns out they haev to replace it so the part is ordered and due in a couple of days. With any luck (I'm no holding my breath) I'll have the TReg back for this weekend.

Surpris, surprise. I still don't have my TReg back. After ordering the gas tank (and somehow not ordering the screws needed to mount it), they finally put the new tank in and ... surprise, surprise ... it had a leak too. They ordered another one which hasn't come in yet. As of tomorrow it will be 3 weeks w/o the car. I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get it back.

Exhaust -

My 04 Reg is in the process of having the catylitic converters replaced. They are on back order as this is apparently a common problem on the Reg and the Cayenne. VW had to get a new Mfgr for them. I have been almost 4 weeks w/o my car. Driving a 05 Reg fromEnterpise the dealer got for me.
Anyone else having a similar problem?

What dealership do you use?

What were the problems with your TPMS?

Hi Neighbor!
I use Atamian in Tewksbury. They have actually been fine, initially poor service and attitude but they have stepped it up in the last year and I think they are doing what they can with a bad product. I have had problems with this SUV since the beginning....long story involving dead batteries secondary to ?tailgate malfunction, TPMS problems (no access to menu, invalid warnings), transmission malfunction leaving me on route 2/Cambridge in 3rd gear, more recently total power shutdown with keys in ignition/locked out of car---cops to scene of lockout...had to break passgr quarter window to get into vehicle(?compass module malfuntion?), fit and finish issues, and now TPMS menu gone again with tire failure messages, went away after resetting but TPMS menu still missing, now the exhaust warning......those are the highlites..... so this forum has been enlightening. I did not realize how common these problems really are.
I am hoping the dealership will work with me as I am happy with them and willing to try a different product.

It's been years and many, many, VW's since I used Atamian, but back then they were horrible. Perhaps they have improved.

I have had very good service at Minuteman VW in Bedford. If Atamian does not come through for you, give Minuteman a shot. There's a very good Touareg tech there.

So, on the TPMS, ar you saying that the Tire menu is gone from the MFI, but you are still getting Tire warnings?

Yes, still warnings, actually the first TPMS warning with this latest computer I was able to get to the tire menu for a quick second then it disappeared.....never to be seen again..... 3 days later the exhaust light is on and there has also been this strange whirring in the dashboard....in the last 2 weeks, but I guess I thought it was the vents opening and closing with the "auto" HVAC....I am always interested to see what they find...it is like a little adventure.....albeit a very expensive and inconvenient adventure!

Thanks for the tip re: Minuteman, I have contacted them before and they were unable to give me a rental (I have a 14 mos old child and we are not able to "wait" for anything) and my husbands work location and hours do not make a drop off feasible (especially with the frequency at which we are at the dealership:)).....so they were out of the running, but I will keep them in mind in the future. I thought maybe it was because we did not buy the car from them??

There was a post made on VWVortex about an updated Convienence control module that corrects loss of MFI settings. Look here

Print that info out, and take it to your service department. Fauvaydoc,
the guy who posted it is a Touareg tech, and has posted a bunch of good, and accurate, technical info.
