Anyone noticed the below on vehicles, 2016 R Line?



Please see below an email to VW.
In a large car such as a Touraeg they have created a scenario whereby many users are unaware that they are running at only 50% braking capacity on the front due to not installing a sensor cable onto pads that are wearing past the pad and onto metal. This is a huge safety issue and people are running around with no awareness that they have significant reduction in brake performance.

At best this is hugely costly to users, at worst life threatening with such a big car and reduced braking performance.



Replaced my previous Altitude in January with an R Line from Peter Cooper whose service was very good.
One of the main reasons was the published difference in fuel consumption, Altitude retained around 25mpg and was high on Road Tax.

Bought R line and noticed immediately it is nowhere near your published figures, speaking to many other R Line owners it would see that we all suffer the same regardless of not being “lead” footed, also the constant niggles with noises, squeaks etc is nothing like the previous version. I am lucky if it gets to 25mpg to match the aged Altitude.

Now with 30,000 miles on the car it felt as if the brake disk was warped, alas No.
What we find on both sides at the front was a pad on each side completely through to the metal, the other one with the sensor completely perfect.
All the aftermarket non VW pads come with a dual sensor thus it would highlight the wear.

So I have had to replace pads and disks on the front due to a scenario that looks like VW were completely aware of an uneven wear problem and thus not putting a senor cable onto the pad that wears excessively.
So many people are falling foul in this and damaging disks unnecessarily.
Not what I expected from VW and looking to see comments back from yourselves.

Colin - can you update your location / vehicle in your profile?

Second - your first paragraphs make you sound like a lawyer trolling for business.

Both my 2008 and my 2014 have included sensors on both the inside and outside pads, so I can't really comment other than to say my experience has been very different from yours.

Also, if your safety claim is legitimate, you are barking up the wrong tree. You should be sending your safety concerns to NHTSA (USA), Transport Canada (Canada), Department of Infrastructure/Regional Development/Cities (Australia), not VW. VW won't do anything until a governmental agency (like those listed above) tell them to.

Personally, I think someone at your dealership cut some corners when they replaced the brakes. But I'm still not sure where they found a brake pad wear sensor with only one sensor on it. Everything for the Touareg, Q7, and Cayenne have 2 sensors on them and have since day one.

Sorry, based in United Kingdom.
No these are factory standard, full VAG stamp, label, badging.
Checked couple other R Lines locally and seem all the same.

As above the number of sensors has been halved. Bad move by VW who don't give a toss.

VW, whatcha going to do next to save four cents per vehicle??? sigh.

So VW have confirmed the Touraeg ships with a single sensor cable, funny the one that does not have the sensor installed wears down to metal whilst the other is untouched pretty much.
Thought of 2 ton vehicles around with drivers unaware of reduced braking capacity on the car beggers belief.
Seems big UK problem but they have not said if it affects any other country.

Seems more of a calliper problem than anything else as that is the usual reason for 1 pad to wear and the matching one not to do so. In other words , sticking callipers. Warranty claim. Also as per colinjwright, how don't you notice the reduction in braking and the noise that must be part of that??? The service department needs a bullet as well for not noticing the difference in wear rate earlier. John

If the car was on Long Life servicing - which is bad news for a long life!! - then the car is only seen at the dealer every 18,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first.

It's why I and others recommend time and distance - service every year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Dealers are normally very happy trying to do the "your brake need replacing, sir/madam" upsell even though often they are being dishonest and that advice is not in their customers' best interests!
