Completely dead battery can develop an internal short. Jumping often will not provide sufficient voltage to start the engine due to leakage across the short. The battery may appear to take a charge, but in fact, does not. Battery load testers will show the fault. You can try testing without a load tester by turning on the headlights. If they quickly dim, there is an internal short. Watch the voltmeter and if it drops fast, there is further evidence of a bad battery. The fix, of course, is a new battery.

I have a hunch that the running gear workshop fault may have been triggered by low battery voltage.
