When starting, the engine surges regularly at idle, maybe a couple hundred RPM up and down. There is a distinct sound of hissing air on a regular (say once each second), in synch with the surging. Seems to run fine on highway, and not noticing any surging, but I can still hear the air hiss sound around town, low speed--in this case, it does surge. Any ideas as to where to point my 3rd party mechanic--or to point me, if it's a simple DIY (loose intake manifold for ex allowing leak?)

Sounds like a loose vacuum hose or leak in the intake somewhere after the MAF sensor.

Pop off the covers on your engine and take a look to see if you can spot a disconnected or broken hose somewhere.

Good suggestion--I took you up on it Did some digging and it looks like it's part labeled "3" in exploded view of Tourareg V8 that's hissing. Part 077 103 245 B "valve".

Anyone have any experience with this other than me? I'm just wondering if something's stuck or if the part has failed?
