2010 Touareg TDI base model. I've owned for 4years and 40k miles with minimal problems (replaced: coolant tank, battery, power steering pump, front lower/upper control arms, relays in steering column lock mechanism, both intake flapper valves under warranty)

I was driving and the engine just cut out, no sputter, just stopped. there are no warning lights on. when I try to start it just cranks with no combustion. The high pressure fuel pump belt is good. it seems like the electric fuel pump is running when I turn on the ignition, but not 100% sure.

Here Is the VCDS scan. I edited it to remove the modules with no errors. These are my pre existing conditions: The radio has been replaced with after market and I recently installed a factory hitch with trailer module which I didn't do any coding on and haven't tested either so that is two of the errors. The CAN programming error showed up after bringing to the dealer for a SCR light that came on but everything seemed to work so I ignored it. The parking sensors errors are likely due to my hitch mounted spare tire, which blocks several of the sensors. The rear hatch doesn't open 50% of the time, I think it is the release mechanism.

Any suggestions on what to look at would be helpful.

I've read about earlier gens having a problem with wires near the splice point. I'm wondering if you have something going on there.

What's your rail pressure when cranking? What is your RPM when cranking?
cranking speed seems really good. This is the first time I have ever seen the engine crank. Usually it start immediately. The engine stopped immediately and there didn't seem to be any sputtering, which makes me think this is an electrical problem affecting fuel delivery--just a guess. I have never measured fuel pressure on a TDI before, I need to read up on that. I see that it is easy to turn on and off the transfer pump with VCDS so I'll start with that.

Update: I toggled the transfer pump and auxiliary pump on and off in VCDS and they do seem to run. I cranked the engine and logged the high pressure fuel pump pressure and it seems off. Pressure was zero with spikes of 8 bar. I don't know what is expected on this. I am getting the gear together to do the VW pressure and volume tests on the transfer and auxiliary pumps. I am guessing I need to test both transfer pumps individually? It looks like the VW test just measures on the outlet of the fuel filter which I believe is the combined output.
Any comment on this?

when cranking I got 168 rpm rail pressure is changes between 0 and 8.6 bar.
Do I assume my high pressure pump is bad, or do I still need to look at the transfer pump(s) and the auxiliary pumps for pressure and volume?

Rail pressure is far too low. Have you checked the fuel filter yet? See if it has fuel in it to start with.
I checked the transfer pump pressure. Spec is >5.8psi, I measured ~6.5psi with a cheap analog gauge so I think transfer pumps are OK. I measured the pressure of the auxiliary pump at ~115psi, spec is > 58psi. I haven't measured delivery volume at 58psi yet, but I think it is OK. It was really delivering in the 55-65psi back pressure range. So I think that will pass once I refine my method.
I replaced the fuel filter ~10K miles ago so I think it is OK

Everything is pointing at the high pressure pump at this point.....

With the ignition on there is a high pitch coming from the (pressure regulating?) solenoid on the high pressure pump. It doesn't seem normal to me that the solenoid would be making this noise.
Possibly the pressure sensor is bad and there really is pressure, or more like the high pressure pump is bad.at $900 for the pump I want to be sure.

Next step may be to remove the regulating solenoid and see if there is metal in the screen? Suggestions?
 
I suggest checking the fuel filter, it's very simple and you will quickly be able to see if anything horrific has happened. From memory if you disconnect the fuel metering valve at the pump, you should get full fuel pressure, so you could try that. While it's disconnected, check the resistance of it.

Thanks for the info on the solenoid. The metering solenoid is available on ebay for cheap. It looks like it comes from China. I'll take the belt off the HP pump tomorrow and see how it turns, Hopefully if it is bad, it will be obvious. It turns out the cheapest place to get a replacement HP pump is from the VW dealer for $682 (surprise!).

I'll pull the filter and look at it for sure. The flow rate out of the auxiliary pump shows that the filter isn't restricting the flow, but it could be full of crap since the fuel return lines go through the filter. And that would be more validation that the problem is the pump.

Latest Update:
1) Pulled the HPFP pressure control solenoid out and there is metal flakes.
2) The rollers in the pump stopped rolling and shifted out of axis with the cam
3) no evidence of metal in the fuel filter. I'll cut it up later when I'm in the cleaning phase.

Don't take the belt off the pump, there is no need. Look in the fuel filter because if the pump has failed, you will have swarf in the filter. Check things properly, don't just randomly replace bits.
Hi Brendanm, thanks for your input, it was helpful. I would say I went through this not in a random way, but in a very logical way. Saying I was random kind of bugs me because I wasn't. I really don't see any change in the test flow that would have been an improvement.
1) I verified that there was fuel pressure at the injectors was 0 when cranking. This was a good indication that the problem is the HPFP but the other pumps still need to be tested.
2) I checked the transfer pump and verified its delivery pressure was in spec.
3) I checked the auxiliary pump and verified that its pressure, and delivery volume at pressure were in spec.
4) I pulled the solenoid on the HPFP and found metal particles. case closed.
5) I checked the fuel filter because you suggested it, and found nothing obvious. I'll dissect it later, but the outcome of this doesn't change anything.
 
Pulling the belt off to try and turn it is random, and mentioning that the metering valve was cheap (as in fire up the parts cannon) is also random. What you actually ended up doing was not random. Sucks that your pump is dead ☹
