OK Guys and Gals hope i get your attention regarding my sump plate career being over.
I have had quite a few requests for sump plates and probably need to make one for a close friend who i talked into a Touareg. (What are mates for :drunk
If i get enough expressions of interest and by that i mean minimum of 8 plates doesn't matter what Touareg series i will do a 1 off run for those who are prepared to step up with their deposit.
PM me with your expressions of interest and i will tally the numbers and get back to those concerned and see if and when this can be made work.
As IF you just asked that.
The guy obviously invested all sorts of time into the R&D and design of his part (I don't even know what we are talking about, but it's irrelevant) and now you expect him to "give it all way" in order to save you shipping costs? Let's be realistic. You obviously have the means to get one made up, but apparently are too cheap to invest into that (read money & time).
Just man the EFFF up and pay for the courier, then take his product and Reverse Engineer it or have someone else do it for you and pay them. Then you can give YOUR work away to others to SAVE THEM shipping fees.
He's providing a part as a solution to a problem that you and other have. If you want to buy the design off him and he's interested in that option, that's a whole other story, but I'm sure the price will be significantly more than your courier fees.
No idea, and that's between you and the designer of the product being discussed.
You got that sort of response from me, because I know how much work goes into designing and manufacturing a product, and people who ask for the "CAD FILES" at the end of such activity, really hit a nerve with me.
There's no point in us two arguing over it, perhaps the OP has gotten great value\help out of your back and forth over the years, and you guys can work something out.
Sorry but I don't respond well to anyone asking for CAD data of a product that I'm selling. (which is what I interpreted from the above)
Hopefully you see this before you commit forum user suicide due to my response!
I accept that not everyone will agree on certain things on a public forum. That's a given.
But the best we can do is respond with manners and politeness because we don't know all the variables.
I get that you are upset and rightly so, but we can, as treggers, be a bit more polite to each other I reckon as theis forum is for treggers, by treggers. If we disassociate us from each other......
I have to agree though, asking for the design files for a product that someone has designed to sell is crossing the line. If you want the CAD files, then go make your own measurements and draft up your own fabrication drawings. What do you think the dealer would say if you went in looking for a new HPFP and said, "that's too expensive, just send me the CAD files." Do you think they'd ask you for a thumb drive or tell you to take a hike? No matter how often you show up to offer them advice and assistance around their service shop, they aren't going to give away their engineering/R&D for free.
It's called Intellectual Property, and it is a very important aspect in the design and manufacturing world. No offense, but it is in bad taste to ask someone for their R&D work.
Gents
While i appreciate all the witty banter back and forth it not worth arguing about.
4e is not the first to ask this question and while he is correct in his assistance to people over the years which has been much appreciated by all.
I will eventually get to do my own design then. I need to redo the side covers any way as well as the left air tank is exposed at the moment and the pump cover is in tatters. God forbid the guy who asks me for the measurements
Hello Drag,
Put me down as interested in getting a sump plate (2007 T2 build).
Greg
PS. Not wanting to start a flame war, but have you considered getting a fabricator in the Hunter area to make the plates under license - that way you control the IP, get some revenue and satisfy the ongoing (albeit small) demand?
Some years ago I bought one of Engineer's plates for my first Touareg off a ClubTouareg member. I recall that it was one of eight or so that were shipped together (US to AU) to save costs. If you can link up with other members you might be able to do the same.
If I may ask a couple questions, what sort of dollars are we looking at for one of these sump guards?
Any idea on shipping costs within Australia?
And I guess a second question from me is, have you made one for the V8 TDI in a T3 model?
Have you got any photos of the product?

Freight generally say to Melbourne or Brisbane would be less than $120
A V8 T3 would not be an issue.
It can be had with what ever writing on it you want or none at all.
I'm fine with anywhere in the ball park of that price for shipping. Do you have any other requests from over here for this run? I'm guessing with one plate on it's own it would probably still cost $1000 to ship or so?

Hi Drag I sent you a pm last week about get a sump guard for my T4. Not sure if it came through but if it’s not too late ad me to the list please. Thanks Andrew
I'm super keen to get a bash plate for an 09' V6 TDI if another order comes to fruition. I'm located just outside of Brisbane, I've sent you a PM and look forward to seeing what comes of it.
Hi Dragline, First of all apologies I understand you've been hassled as a result of your skill regarding the underbody protection for touaregs and I am only adding to it haha. I wanted to know if you could provide me with a price to have one fabricated for a 2007 T1 Touareg V10TDI. I really appreciate your time. I live in Perth Western Australia.
Hi Dragline. Are you still making skidplates? I just bought a 2005 T1 with air suspension and V8 and would like to be able to protect it. I’m in the eastern US. Where in Oz are you located? I have family there that could pick up. Thanks!
Hello Dragline, looks like there is additional interest for you. I just got my 2010 V6TDI with Air Suspention. If you are going to make more plates I would be interested.
Thanks DJ
