Well, my wheel was all shiny and slick, plus I hate using the shifter lever while driving down the mountains, so I thought it was time for an upgrade!

I bought a brand-new heated tiptronic (Lenkrad Multifunktion Schaltwippen VW Touareg 7P Leder schwarz grau) wheel from ebay Germany, and got to work.

First, I removed the airbag by turning the steering 90° left and right from center, and depressing each clip. TURN THE IGNITION OFF, but leave the key in. You need to apply a lot of force here, and pull each side of the airbag as you depress each clip. Then center the wheel and remove the key altogether. Don't turn the key back on until you've reconnected the airbag!
I followed this thread for the airbag removal.

Once the airbag was removed, I used an M12 Triple-Square bit to remove the bolt holding the wheel on. Before I removed the wheel, I scribed a line on both sides of the mark to know where center position is. You can also see that I was lucky and had the heated clockspring already installed from the factory on my 2011 Lux.

Next, we'll wire the clock spring for heat!

While the clock spring is correct, there is no wiring from the vehicle to the clock spring to carry current for the heated wheel. In order to do this, order a VW repair wire with the part numbers below. They will have ends like this

Open the left dash fuse cover, and remove the two T25 torx screws holding it to the dash. Then remove the rear cover (3 easy clips around the perimeter of the fuse box) so you have access to the back, and the purple pieces.

Use a small pick to slide the top purple piece towards you (~5mm). You will then be able to insert the wire end of 000979227E into the slot for Fuse 11.

Slide the purple piece back in to lock the pin, and route the yellow wire down along the bundle of red wires. Reinstall the back piece of the fuse panel and re-secure the panel using the two torx screws. DO NOT INSTALL THE FUSE YET! Splice this wire with half of 000979225E. This wire will go to position 2 in the steering wheel module 16 pin plug. Wire ground to position 1.

Reinstall the steering wheel! Pay attention to the mark you made earlier and tighten the crap out of it. I went to 70ft-lbs. There is a Y-shaped plug that will also plug into the clock spring, then plug in everything else you removed! Press the airbag back on straight until it clicks down, and you're done with the hand tools! Go ahead and install the 15a fuse in slot 11.

VCDS Coding Post
I'm unfamiliar with OBDeleven, but it can likely acheive all of these functions as well.

*My new steering wheel module wouldn't accept coding. I unscrewed the old module from the old wheel and installed it into the new wheel, and everything works perfectly!

First, open '16- Steering Wheel' module in VCDS. Under long coding helper, byte 1 bit 2 should be checked.
Rectangle Blue Font Screenshot Software

Then byte 2, bit 4-5 should select 'MFL with Tiptronic installed' as below

Your final coding will be as below. Click 'Do It!'

Close the steering wheel module, and go to '08-Auto HVAC'
Byte 1, bit 7 should be enabled.

Final coding below. Do It!

Key-off, key-on and you should see the steering wheel icon in the RNS climate screen.

I didn't have to change transmission coding at all, and as soon as you hit one of the paddles it will switch to displaying manual mode in the MFD. Easy peasy!

I'm presuming a RHD (New Zealand) car would need different wiring loom part numbers as the fuse box locations are the same but the wheel is further away?

Just wanted to update, I added the remaining photos that I forgot to upload 6 months ago 😅

We just had our first cold enough days here for the heater to be enabled, however it doesn't seem to be heating... Changed the Steering Wheel coding to 000C35 and voila! Heat! I also changed the adaptation of channel 10 from 28 to 34, and the temperature increased a good bit!

Nice.
Always good to have a heated steering wheel for those really cold days/nights.

I'm getting ready to install the same wheel. Where does this 000C35 coding get entered? Is this in addition to the long coding in your post above?
Thanks for posting this. I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger on the wheel without this thread.

It is the new long coding, instead of 000435 it is 000C35.
