So, in Layman's terms, locked diffs turns the car into Front Wheel Drive?

Nope. Locking the rear diff causes both rear tires to receive the same amount of torque - no matter if they need it or not. Locking the center diff causes the front tires to receive the same torque as the rears - no matter if they need it or not.

I've only been in one place that I couldn't climb with it in LO and unlocked diffs. Maybe could have done it with a little more momentum but wife and kids were in the car too so I backed down.
