Diesel won't start

409 Views 20 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  SaVAGeSoot
2005 R5 diesel.

I just changed the Gates coupling on the alternator, to do so I removed the inlet manifold and alternator.
It's reassembled but now the engine doesn't start.

The engine spins but it doesn't seem to be getting fuel.
Any ideas?

I've done this job several times and have never had this problem.

Did you prime the fuel lines ?
Did you prime the fuel lines ?
Nothing in the fuel system was touched.
It looks like it's probably the crank position sensor.

Based on ?
Mine is a CATA but when I re over the intakes there were 2 fuel lines I had to disconnect. Hence my question.

Ah, ok. This one isn't like that.
Based on ?
The location of the sensor and its wiring and how heavy handed my son is.
Can you think of anything else in that region that might cause a no start issue?
What cranking rpm does VCDS show?
I haven't done a VCDS yet but it's cranking at the normal rate.
You need something like 290 rpm min. Can't recall the exact value.
It's spinning as fast as ever.
Where is this connection supposed to go?
Wouldn't be the crankshaft sensor would it?
I'll put it on the front page too.

Your answers to my question were not adequate, so I can't tell anything based on the info you are providing.
What numerical values does "normal rate" and "fast as ever" convert to?
They convert to the same speed the starter has always gone.
How hard is that?
Answer the question being asked or continue with your approach.... my ride is fine so it makes no difference to me.
I really don't think it's relevant, there's nothing wrong with the starter it's operating properly.
I don't think you can help anyway, you're barking up the wrong tree.
I'll sit back and watch you work in that case....
P.S. I never said anything about "being the starter", but carry on with your awesome diagnostic
You asked about starter rpm.

Do you know what that disconnected wire in the picture is?
