Does anyone know if the DRL are supposed to be on all the time during the day with seemingly no way to turn them off? Maybe this is a dumb question but I figured there was a way to run the car with no light on. Also at night I can't seem to find a setting where all lights are off either. I have read about the European headlight selector-switch mod that some people are selling and I wonder if this will alow me to turn off all my lights if I so desire. Thanks in advance.

As your vehicle is set up now, your DRL are on all the time and there is no off setting for the lights.
As far as I am aware there are only two ways to turn off the DRL. First you can VAG COM the DRL to put them into the MFI. There, you can turn them off or on. (I am going to try to post a link, if it doesn't work, go to search, type in "Trick and tips". You will see a posting by Spockcat with some VAG COM tricks including the DRL issue.)

Second, you can do what I may do and that is to purchase a Euro light switch from Treg Central. Cost about $70 + shipping. There is a setting for parking lights. With this setting, it will turn off the DRL's, but the parking lights will remain on. Also, there is no off setting with this switch as well. Now, a couple of things to consider. First there are some additional directions on how to install this found in the forum. (Can't remember where, but posted by Spockcat) Because it is a Euro switch it includes a setting for rear fog lights which the US tregs do not have. You will need to bend one of the pins (I think #7) so it does not trip a warning message on the MFI. If a message does occur, you will have to find someone who can VAG COM you. If you do a search, you will find addional info on this topic with more precise instructions.

Hope this helps.

thanks Joe I appreciate it. I was begining to wonder if it was just me. Who would have thought they wouldn't put an off switch for the lights. I'm gonna look into the VAG option. By the way does VAG stand for anything? I was thinking about popping for the software and trying to do it myself. Is this something anyone with a laptop can do or do I need additional skills/equipment? Thanks again.

A fellow over on vwvortex has figured out how to wire in the rear fog light. If you do this, then you will have full functionality with the Euro switch, without bending over pin 7. See this link.

VAG-COM is a software package for Windows that emulates the functions of the dealers' very expensive proprietary scan tools. I don't know what it stands for, but I am sure someone else on the forum could explain. I have posted a few links below.
First link will take you to the VAG-COM site:

http://ross-tech.com

This next link tells you the computer requirements:

This link will take you the Vortex forum on VAG COM

Hope this helps. Just a follow up on what I have done and why I did it. I decided to go with the Euro switch for two reasons. One - I like the posibility of having rear fog lights someday. Two - I like being able to turn off the DRL but leaving the parking lights on.

But the reason I went with the Euro switch in the first place is simple, but crazy. I found out on the Vortex that when you put the DRL in the MFI - reguardless if they are on or off after that - you lose that little DRL indicator light. (If I am wrong about this then I will VAG my Treg) I like that little light - it tells me when my DRLs are on or regular lights are on in a quick look. Plus I like the safety feature of the DRL being on all the time. Even though the Euro switch will allow me to turn off the DRL in the parked postion - it still will not allow the exterior of my vehicle to go with out some kind of lighted indicator.

Hope this helps.

Just installed the Euro switch and I am liking it a lot. Still have my little DRL indicator, but also able to turn off the DRLs with the parking light feature. I messed up the wire for the rear fogs, so if someone ever finds an easy way to hook them up, I may have to order new electrical cables for the rear fogs. If anyone wants any tips on what not to do, just send me a message. I can also give some good suggestions on what should be done. Anyway, I like the Euro light switch and definitely recommend it.

I have vag'd my lights so I can't try this. If you put the emerg brake on, do the DRL's go out ? Mine don't because of the vag, but the manual indicates that emerg has to be off for DRL's. Some GM's do this also.

Another useless part of the manual.
- oil capacity wrong
-auto/econ lights on A/C wrong
- no keyless start
-no motion detector
-no anti-tow
-garage door set up wrong
-no extra wipe (5 sec delay) from brochure
-park distance controls changed (for the better)
-nav manual - terrible (trip computer useless for ETA )
- ? more -
Better to get info on the web

Turning off DRL's

I have a 2004 V8 and can not stand the DRL's. I have another car that this is a "dealer" selected feature, and had it turned off. When I asked the salseman to have the same done for the Touareg he diverted me to the service manager. He spouted about the dangers of turning them off and how they save lives. When I pressed for info on how to have them shut anyway he acted as if I had laid claim to his first born. :censored: My plea is this ... is there anyone, shop or individual, that has a VAG-COM and knows how to do this in North to Central New Jersey or surounding area. I am willing to meet you and compensate for the use/time. [-o<

Unfortunately, I had the same experience at my dealership. They will not VAG COM your Treg because it is a liability - they are liable should anything bad happen. Think about it. All the things they have in place are there for a reason. What if something bad happened because the dealership turned something off. Who says that you wouldn't turn around and sue the dealership. Anyway, just my .02 Living in WV, I am having a hard time finding someone to VAG my Treg. So good luck.

My DRLs come on even if the emergency brake is on. I haven't VAGed anything yet.
I just tried this the other night. My DRLs stayed on when I used the parking break. My neighbor was the one who suggested this to me because his 2001 Jetta has that feature.

Trust me, if you can't find someone to VAG you and you have to have the DRLs off, get the EURO light switch. You won't be sorry you did. One other neat feature I found with the Euro switch is that you can turn the park lights on with the Treg off. You couldn't do anything like this with the US switch. You may ask what is the significance of this well here is an example. Lets say you are hanging out with your buddies and you are on a dark road. You can turn the parking lights on, which won't give you any significant amount of light, but it will make people aware that your car is parked there. I don't know - I may be reaching, but you just never know. :confused2:

As for "Parking light-- leave the turn signal on (best to the traffic side) The side light stays on with the key off. MFI also indicates warming. Actually it's great- little battery drain.
My BMW had the switch for parking lights . It also dropped for main beams to parking lights when you turned the key off. Nice feature except that was the only electronic that didn't turn off by itself after 10 minutes and would flatten the battery (Leaving the trunk or door adjar didn't kill the battery)
Getting rid of the DRL's is just combative . Having the option to SIMPLY turn them off in rare occasions would be nice. VAGing to add 6 lights to the mix for backcountry roads is fantastic.

I have to thank "Aircooled" for Vagging my DRLs so now I have the ultimate control over the lights.

I now have the option in the MFI to turn the DRLs - ON or OFF - when I want them.

I couldn't be happier.

Dealer tells me that that DRLs can't be turned off

I have just recently purchased a 2004 Touareg V8 and had it in the shop for a number of repairs. While the car was in the shop, I requested that they recode the MFI so that the DRL would not be on all the time. They told me that recoding it was not possible -- is the service dept BSing me?

Does anyone know if the earlier models have systems that does not allow the DRL to be an option in the MFI? My VIN is 199xx.

The service department is BSing you OR they don't know how. VW doesn't tell them the tricks.

When I traded my V8 in for a V10, I left the DRL option in the MFI and left the DRLs off. When the dealer sold the car I got a call from the service department asking how they can turn the DRLs back on. They had torn the car apart looking for how I turned them off. When I told them to check the MFI, they were amazed. They had no clue you could do that.
