Re-screw the shaft bolt through the cv joint into the shaft and the joint will pop off. Then you can take the joint apart to clean and repack. When I have a CV boot failure and catch it soon, I will not always take the joint apart, but just put some fresh grease in and reinstall with new boot. The A student would probably take the joint apart and clean.

Don't take it apart unless you must. Just soak it in parts cleaner, dry it and then repack. If it does come apart, make sure it all goes back together like it was assembled - each ball goes back where it came from and the race is lined up like it was originally. They're not matched from the factory but do develop a wear pattern and will wear faster if not reassembled as before. (Unless I'm wrong) :)

Good luck!
