We have a '13 Treg TDI with tow package, 165K miles, fully-deleted/Malone stage1. Towing a 5K lbs travel trailer ~15K miles including 750 miles of gravel road. WDH hitch is a BlueOx Swaypro which puts stress on the system like any WDH. The last two trips we've been hearing an increasing CREAKING sound that is a bit alarming that is coming from somewhere around the rear of the vehicle (perception while sitting up front). Happens even on gentle undulations on pavement at hwy speeds, or slower. I thought maybe it was ball-coupler noise but the ball is well-lubed. I even sat on the A-frame so I could hear and feel around while the wife drove 5mph over a couple hundred yards of gravel road with bumps/potholes and I couldn't hear-directonally or feel where it was coming from. My fear is that the 2" receiver is fatiguing/cracking where it attaches to the rear structure of the Treg. We're gong on some LONG trips this year and want to be secure.
1. How to diagnose further? Dismantle the rear bumper? how?
2. How to reinforce the Treg receiver? <<< years ago I read that an RV dealer in Canada was good at welding on
some reinforcement for Treg receivers. Any info on what reinforcement should/can be done? Diagram?
Cheers/TIA,
Leigh
