Hi!

I've just noticed that my 2008 2.5 TDI (engine code: BPE) is loosing some serious amount of coolant (like possibly half a liter or more in under 15-20 minutes). The pink fluid seems to drip from right behind the left wheel/wheel arch, about 30-40 cm inwards from the driver's door - just where probably the brake pedal is inside the cabin. (This is obviously a LHD model). Now, I'm not sure whether the fluid is actually dripping from above that point, or it's just the undertray routing it there, but that's where it's dripping from to the ground. The coolant is only dripping while the engine is running, and stops about 5-6 minutes after I stop the engine. The car is not loosing any coolant while standing, even for multiple days.

When I look into the engine compartment (from above, and as much from the side as I can), I see no signs of the leak whatsoever anywhere. The reservoir tank and the EGR cooler are both located on the other (right side, LHD) of the vehicle, and so is the turbo - so I don't think those would be the source of the leak. However, I think the water pump is located on the left side, but unfortunately at (in) the bottom half of the engine, where I can't see it.

There's no white or gray residue under the oil cap, and the color of the oil generally also seems fine. The car does not seem to lose any oil whatsoever, and the oil level doesn't seem to rise either. Oil was changed a year and <10.000 kms ago.

Am I right with the assumption that the coolant leak might originate from my water/tandem pump? Or is the location and amount of the leak indicative of some other component? Might it be the Webasto heater?

The freezing point of the coolant has been checked last November, and was at around -35 degrees C, so a crack or bust because of coolant freeze is virtually impossible.


Any ideas welcome.

I was really hoping to see some comments on this topic. I have an 04 Treg v8 that is leaking in the same spot. Watery /Orangish type liquid.
