Hi Everyone,
Forgive me if I am asking questions that have been asked before, I have done some reading that has answered some questions, but a few remain.

I have found a repo'd 2006 V8 unit for sale for a good price. It seems quite clean, it has about 122k km on it. No service history unfortunately. What kind of a gamble could I be taking, in terms of wrong oil used, important service intervals, etc. I currently have a 06jetta diesel, been a great little car, but I would not buy a used one if they could not verify the correct oil was used. Does the Touareg have the same strict criteria for oil or something else?

How "home mechanicable" are these? I am an above average shadetree mechanic (have restored old cars & motorcycles, rebuild many a motor - both car and bike - stock to 500hp). Can you work on them with the correct computer link (ross tech or the sorts), or would I be saying "I do" to the dealership.

Thanks in advance!

When it comes to the right type of oil, it's certainly not as disastrously finicky in its oil diet, as a VW TDI would be(I own a 2005 with the BHW engine btw). So all you CAN do is, just pray that they weren't idiots enough to have used $1.00 a liter(quart) Quaker State mineral oil at the local Jiffy Lube or something along those lines. 502.00 are the min spec norms. specified by VW for this type of V8.

Above average shade tree mechanic? I think that you just answered 90% of it all!

All that's left really as a dealer item, unless you are really "above average" is for you to get that timing belt change done on that non-fsi'd V8!

Thanks for the feedback. When I saw the pictorials for the T belt, I was suprised as I thought they were all chains. I did the belt on my jetta in the spring, it was no big deal, just time consuming.

Now I just have to decide if I can justify feeding it. I drive a lot, hence the TDI. I like the new Touareg diesel, but I have no desire to take on a car payment right now. This 06 nicely loaded is less than half the cost of a basic '10 diesel. 30k difference buys a lot of gas.

The precise reason why I bought my 2005 now. In about 3-4 years from now, you can always sell your 2006, and opt for a 2008 V10 TDI(what I might be after), or a 2009-2010 V6 TDI.
