I'm looking at trading in a Subaru wagon (which I realize isn't a true off-road capable vehicle) for a new auto. Daily things that it needs to be able to do is drive a quick 10 minutes to work and haul three dogs in the cargo area. Irregular things it needs to be able to do is drive back roads and ranch roads in south Texas during hunting seasons. Once or twice a year thing it needs to be able to do is roll over rocks and through washes in Big Bend country.

So . . . I'm considering a Touareg TDI, but some research has led me to discover that the 2011+ models are maybe a bit watered down compared to the earlier models on the off-road ability (not trying to start a flame-fest or anything, just concerned about the locking diff, low mode, and suspension). I also wouldn't mind saving a little money if I can find a lightly used one that makes me happy.

I'm assuming that a 2010 would be my best bet, but if y'all have any feelings one way or another, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

Low range was dropped to save weight on the latest models, same deal with the cayenne. Rear Locking diff was an option that was rarely ordered. Center locking diff is standard.

My opinion, not having a low range makes the truck an awd car.

The H/L versus without depends so the without gearing.

Volkswagen Transporter Syncro was without H/L and had 1st and 2nd really low to allow the crawling and with center and rear lockers it went places where Pajero's and Land Cruiser's went.

I would rather have 2012 without H/L but with center & rear lockers and air suspension as the biggets issue is the ground clearance with current T3 4Motion.

Anyways, the current North America T3 (2011-2012 and onwards) have 7.9" ground clearance while Subaru Outback haves 8.9".

If you want the ground cleanrace and H/L then look TDI models 2010 and before.
