Complete disabling of T3 LED DRLs (eyelash) via VCDS

Here's a VCDS solution to turn the LED DRLs off entirely (even when the headlights are on). This gives a symmetric look in the event you have an eyelash out (as discussed in Daytime Running Light LED fail thread). I found some of this in bits and pieces around the forums and had to do some trial and error to get the desired results. Here's a summary of what worked on a 2016.

Add the Daytime Running Lights menu option to the RNS-850 and disable current monitoring of the parking/DRLs:
  • VAG-COM
  • 09 - Central Electronics
  • Coding - 07
  • Long Coding Helper
  • Select Byte 3
    • Bit 0 - check it (this adds DRL control to RNS-850)
  • Select Byte 14
    • Bit 4 - uncheck it (this disables load monitoring of parking lights)
    • Bit 6 - uncheck it (this disables load monitoring of LED DRLs)
    • (yes, I had to disable both to prevent bulb warnings even though the amber parking lights still stay on)
  • Click Do It! to write to the controller
Go into the RNS-850 and turn off Daytime Running Lights

At this point, the DRLs are off - but the LEDs will turn back on when the headlights are turned on. Back to VCDS... Adjust the dimming of the LEDs to turn them off.
  • VAG-COM
  • 09 - Central Electronics
  • Security Access
    • Use code 20113
  • Adaptation - 10
  • Select Channel 3
    • Set to 20 (this may be vehicle specific... keep turning it down until the LED lights turn off)
  • Save it
The end result is... the LED strips are off all the time now. Even when the headlights are on.

Do you have a photo with the eyelashes off but the LED on?

As I see it, there are two LEDs that come on by default as the DRLs (per headlight assembly). One is the “eyelash” or line on the bottom of the assembly (and wraps up the side a bit) and the “u shape” that wraps around the main headlight.

With these changes, both of the DRL LEDs are always off.

When the light switch is on parking lights - just the amber parking lights come on. When the light switch is full on - the headlights come on. When the switch is off - no lights are on. In all cases the LED DRLs are turned off (both the eyelash and the u shape).

When I lost one of my eyelashes(headlight) and before VW replaced it I simply dimmed the other one right down. Didn't have to turn off load monitoring etc.. there are few variations of these headlights and how they are configured depending upon the country eg didnt have the parking lights, only in the adventure model here
I did this a few months ago in hopes to save the other side that still works and not look like a junker going down the road. This gives me time to open them up and repair them both.
Good stuff, recently one of my low beams went out, It was just the silver module on the back though.
My eyelash failed on passenger side (2017 Wolfsburg). I don’t know if it’s coincidence or associated, but the light with the burnt out eyelash is also much brighter. Is this consistent with others’ experience? Really frustrating, my wife was following me in the Touareg the other night and it looked like only the DRL was on for the driver side. I dread dropping $$$$ to fix it.

also curious if anything can be done to turn the working eyelash off with OBDeleven?

Same. Driver's side intact, Passengier side eyebrow failed a year ago, center U running light has now failed.

I get an orange "light bulb:"icon and an occasional warning to check my lights in the MFI...they seem to come and go..not permanent.

Looks like a common problem (mine is 2016 TDI exec)....VW wants thousands to replace/install...I just keep driving it

Yes it can be.
09 long coding
Byte 3, enable bit 0 to add DRL option in nav menu
Byte 14, disable bits 4 and 6.
Switch off, reboot nav, go into lights menu and turn off drl's
Thanks for the write up. Wish we could keep the U and disable the eyelashes
