Hi all,
I have a 11 TDI lux and 60k is coming up. Already had a fuel pump replaced and I am currently dealing with a set of very loud Pirrelis. That appears to be a cupping issue on the inside edge of the tires that I am puzzled by. Plenty of tread left but the noise has gone from the quietest I have ever had to a lifted pick up truck with mud tires on it.....whump whump whump...all 340 miles of my weekly commute.
So I have a 100k bumper to bumper warranty on it. Would love to know if there are things that I should be looking for. Especially suspension wear components.

Invoice says right side fuel pump. I got the glow plug light of death. It cleared and the truck ran fine. Took it to my trusted dealer and they scanned it and it came up as a fail to run on that pump. So they tried to manually run it and it was dead. They indicated the only reason why it probably didn't die was that the tank was full. Matt

Just came across the Pirelli hate thread. Looks like I am jumping ship. Pretty found of Conti's...maybe try those.
Glad I found that thread. I am obsessive about tire pressures and vehicles overall. The tires are 95 percent highway use and are garbage. Unreal how quick the noise came on. It gets louder everyday. All the insides have the high/low scalloping. What a waste..plenty of meat on them but I wont last that long. After 6 hours of driving each way its enough to make you go mad.
 
You won't have to look very far for a hate Conti thread either!
 
Uneven tyre wear is normally down to alignment, not the tyres, regardless of the make.

Touaregs usually wear their tyres out very evenly . . . albeit faster that owners might like!
 
Pirelli's

I have 100,000km on my Pirelli's now and I guess they are done based on the fact they are louder than normal too. I thought since the tread looks good I had many more km to replacement. Oh well I guess I will order a new set before spring.
What makes the Conti's better on the Touareg? I have them on my Porsche and love the km I got out of them. I thought Conti's weren't capable for a 5000 lb truck. Is their a particular model for the Touareg?

I guess I will ask my Frisby Tire dealer to price both and give me the best deal on either.

Not sure if they will be better but I have drank the cool-aid with the conti's on my cars so I would be willing to try them on the truck.
Basically I have 60% tread left and the noise is so bad I feel like I am driving a dump truck. It was immediate at my last tire rotation and like discussed I can actually see the high and low spots...alternating every tread block on the inside edges of all four tires. I had the alignment done as well along with a balance at my last service and the tech indicated he didn't have to touch a thing.
The tires were new at 37500 and when I say I drive ALL highway I am not joking. Work in NJ but live in Maine. Make my commute late at night and drive through NYC without even having to tap the brakes. The mileage I put on my cars is as easy as it gets. Long and smooth. I also don't skimp on service. I rely on my car to perform....get me to work and get me back home so I can unwind without drama. I buy something new every 18 months and this is my 28th vehicle at 42 years old. I have never owned a single vehicle other than my 1981 M535i that even came close to using up a set of tires like this. My last ride I had was a 2009 Ridgeline. Making the same commute I got 77k out of the oem Michelins and traded in at 89k with the orig. brakes.
Pretty easy on my stuff. Nothing wrong with my truck. Suspect it is the price I will pay for the suspension geometry and settings VW chose. Bottom line is I have a 53k dollar car that when purchased and until late was absolutely the quietest machine I have ever owned or been in and now I can't use my bluetooth because of the drone. This folks is a problem.
If folks have luck with a certain make and model tire please ket me know. I need all season as it snows like crazy around here. I dont care if they need to be replaced every 30 k. I just want them to be quiet until they go to the big tire pit in the sky.
For now I am going to under inflate the things a bit and see if the blocking will burn off. Pathetic. Matt

I’ve had the same problem with tires on three different cars I have owned here in Germany. Sadly enough, all were VWs (2007 Passat wagon, 2001 Bora wagon: Jetta in the U.S.A., 1997 Caddy pickup. All German models.) However, I only had the problem with the summer tires on any of these cars. Like you, always had the maintenance performed at the VW dealer. Every time I put on a new set of tires, I had them check/adjust alignment. All of the cars were front wheel drive, but the scalloping only happened on the rear tires. When those were rotated to the front, it was so loud that I immediately had them put back on the rear. 60% -70% tread left and had to replace due to the noise level. The dealer always insisted it was the tire manufactures fault, tire company said ‘incorrect tire pressure’ or ‘bad shocks.’ I had a friend who works for SKF (German auto parts manufacture) and explained the issue. He set up an appointment for me to have the R&D department check out the Passat as the shocks are manufactured at SKF. Findings were: no issues with shocks (I didn’t even know they could check them), perfect alignment and no balance issues. The inspector stated that they see this often with cars running ‘wider’ tires, but had no cause for what they were seeing. They suggested more frequent rotation form front to rear, about every 3000 miles.
Hope I don’t run into this issue with my new Treg. With today’s automotive technology, I have to agree with your statement: Pathetic.

My euros have always loved tires as well. I did notice that michelin has a lattitude that some folks have had luck with. Might try them. Still puzzled by the tire pressures difference between front and back...a handling thing I suspect. Matt
