Is there any difference between coils that color denotes? I'm replacing mine on 2008 4.2. It came with red coils and the replacements are black. Any difference? Thanks, Bill

I don’t think the coils came in different colours. There are various dots on the original coils that denote what psi they are.
The original coils on my 2011 Sport was black. I replaced it to H&R lowered springs which were blue. Sounds like your red coils are aftermarket

There are color rings on them that denote their respective spring rates, just like sway bars

I have no clue whether the parts are shared between the T2 4.2 V8 FSI and the EA888 Gen 2 of the same time period, but in the EA888 world factory packs were black on VWs, and Audis got red top/R8 coil packs.

if your 08 V8, which is an Audi motor, came with red packs, you are likely better off with red tops.

be careful where you buy them from - they’re not that much money, I would pay at dealer. Lots of fakes online. I got a fake set from rockauto in 2013. YMMV
Don't the red coil packs have a higher spark output than the standard black ones?

Like Wang said, that's generationally dependent. For modern vag yes
Ignition coils! Never entered my mind either. Sorry for tangent heading in the wrong direction!

The proper technical term for a modern ignition coil pack that sits atop of a spark plug is COP (coil-on-plug).
That’s what had thrown me off… coils vs coil packs!
