Hi. First, let me thank everyone for this forum, I have been reading the threads here for years... finally joined in:)

My 2006 V6 Gas Touareg (132,000 KM) has the check engine light on and ESP light on. I plugged in the scanner and it reads the following codes:

P0101
P0420
P0430
P0068

The truck isn't pulling to either side, so guessing alignment still ok but exhaust smell rich, consumption is way above average and the drive seems unusually heavy. The ESP light starting coming on every now and then (in non-slip surfaces) and soon after a front brake job, plus now heavy snow in Montreal, the light is always on!

Can someone please help? For the check engine, how do I determine the problem (sequence to troubleshooting)? And ESP, can it be just an alignement that I need, but what should I check before doing that, or to ID the actual problem? Actually, can that switch be stuck? My kid's apple juice spilled on the center console about 2 years ago and ever since it's been a little sticky. I ruled that possibility out because I figured the ESP is on by default as soon as you turn on the engine, right?? And it's been such a long time since that incident!

Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Dealer cleaned 2 faulty grounds and erassed codes. MIL and ESP lights back on with same faults codes within 10 minutes of leaving dealer. Went back, dealer suggested replacing Air filter, the MAF sensor and cleaning the trottle body. Decided to replace air filter and clean the MAF throttle body with CRC cleanig products.

At start, engine seems to idle much better but 10 minutes into drive, ESP light came back. Scanned and one code left P0101 (Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance). Any suggestions on what this could be related to? Should the MAF be changed? Dealer doesn't seem sure and relying on their suggestions to change MAF and throttle body ($1700 job) seems drastic for an ESP light doesn't it???

ESP is always on unless you turn it off with the switch, then the light should come on to remind you that it is now switched off.

I'd certainly clean the switch with electrical contact cleaner to be sure it is OK or at least turn it off/on/off/on as soon as I have started the car [before driving it and before the light comes on after 10 minutes as you describe] to see if it functioning as it should.

But . . . have you got 4 IDENTICAL tires on the car?

Same make, same model, same tread pattern, same size and same wear across all 4 within 2mm?

I did specifically that after erasing the codes... I turned the switch on/off/on several times and made sure switch is working and indeed it is, therefore I can rule out a defective switch. Tires are all the same, brand new winter tires on now, checked pressure all ok!

Now I drove the car an hour ago and now the MIL is back on. Scanner shows P0068 (MAP/MAF Throttle position correlation) and P0101 (Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance). I'm gonna try replacing the MAF this weekend and see where that takes me:(

Still struggling to connect these faults to the ESP light. I read in other forums that VW had a common brake light switch problem that tripped the ESP light... could that be??? Any input would be appreciated!

I don't know that the ESP light would come on for a MAF. I would try to get rid of the MAF code before doing anything else. If it were me I would try cleaning the MAF instead of replacing it. You can also use Vag Com (if available) to look at the out put from it and see if that is what is causing the issue. Lots of stuff on Ross-Tech's wiki about that. Also good info at the vortex (that type if thing isnt specifc to a treg.

Just thinking out loud about the things that could cause both issues - possibly the engine speed sensor or something like that? Weird. ESP is not disabled automatically when certain engine conditions exist is it? (Been too long sine I read a manual)

Had the MAF cleaned, erased all codes and took it for a drive. As soon as I got to about 100 km/hr (60 mph), 6th gear, 2100 rpm, the ESP light came on. I erased and repeated this 3 more times and each time the ESP came back on at almost the exact same car/engine speeds. Each time, the MIL would come on 5 minutes later.

I erased the faults one last time and I've now been driving it below these car/engine speeds for the past 20 km and no faults appear. Can it be a speed sensor? How do you troubleshoot this?
