I have a major major problem with 04 Touareg V8. I can't get out of park. I spoke to the dealer and they told me that the battery was low and needed to be charged. Well I did that and it still won't go into gear. Has anyone experienced this problem.

I am taking a guess here, but your shift lock may not be disengaging. Do you hear a "click" of the lock disengaing when you step on the brake pedal once the car has been started? This happened to my 2003 Passat. It also prevented me from being able to remove my key from the ignition once.

I dont hear a click. Also the little foot depress indicator on the dash is not illuminated.

I am no mechanic, but I honestly think that this is your problem. I believe you can remove the collar and console from around the gearshift itself and physically see the lock engaging and disengaging. At this point you can unstick it by hand and add some sort of grease (if necessary) to ensure that it will release properly in the future.

Check your voltage on the battery. Should be 13.8 on the dash, and likely functional at lower levels.

Shifter could be the problem.

There is a stalk inside the shifter stem that must be pulled UP to change a gear. The thumb button does this. If the thumb button on the shifter has lost its 'linkage', it is not going anywhere. Does the button feel correct? If you feel so inclined, you can easily remove the shifter handle and pull the stalk manually by popping the trim and unclipping the handle (big metal 'staple'). Doing so however means you'll need the dealer to reinstall the handle (cost me $50) unless you have the button setting tool.

The rest of the shifter mechanism looked fairly rugged, but tight. I doubt something could have wedged inside that mechanism with the shifter cover intact. The shifter cover (the black slide) can get jammed if an object gets caught. See DIY Shifter article in DIY section on this.

Had the same bug and they found that the cardanic axle was stripping some loose wires under the car. This caused a short circuit that blew the fuse responsible with the engaging/disengaging of the button on the shifter lever.
It happened on 29 december, 12 days after arriving from the dealer.
I hope that you have an easy problem or the same as mine. (it tooked 1-2 hours till they fixed it - crowdy day...).
Best regards,

If he isnt hearing the gear shift lock mech disengage...In most VW's the brake switch takes a dump. Its right behind the pedal. Now, I dont know if the T-Reg has one but Im guessing it does since it controls your brake lights and cruise control circuits. They go bad ALOT. I actually still have a spare one from 5 years ago cause it went out all the time...lol. Just a thought.

I just had an experience whereby I couldn't shift to park....it was stuck on Drive....I shifted to Sport mode....the tiptronic....then back to Drive and still wont go to Neutral, Reverse or Park. Anyone had this occurance?

I had to almost break it to get it to get out of Drive....to Park.

Its back home

Dmk Alex we had the same exact same problem. Some wires that were underneath the truck were broken by some moving parts. The wire harness and plugs were replaced and now everything is fine. Thanks guys for all the suggestions.
