A month ago my battery drained for whatever reason. I keep my jumper cables stashed away in that left closed storage compartment in the trunk.
I needed to open my tailgate to get to the jumper cables but since the car battery was so dead, it wouldnt open/release.
I then took my physical key but behold, no key slot can be found on the tailgate.
So I had to climb into the back, over the back seats, into the trunk and from there open the compartment to get the jumber cables. Then climb all the way back out.

Is there really no way to open the tailgate if ones car battery goes flat or dies?

There is an emergency release, but only if you are stuck inside of it and it is not easy to get to. From the outside with a dead battery, your SOL.

Never seen a lock on a Touareg tailgate.

....since the lock is locked electronically
Which brings up the question .... if the battery is dead, can one still open a door from the inside using the double-pull method? (You know, when the car is still running you need to pull the handles once to activate the unlock, then a second time engages the handle). Anyone have an idea? I don't want to disconnect the battery just to check it out, but I do want to know before the battery accidentally dies or doesn't work. Thanks.

enchanted_egg, it is a mechanical system that is behind the double-pull so even with a dead battery you can still get out, that would be a HUGE safety risk in the event of a crash if you couldn't!

Doors and locks on Touaregs are probably the most frustrating feature of my vehicle to-date. My rear hatch is locked 99.9999% of the time I try to get into the back for anything, and it's usually when I have a handful of stuff or my keys are sitting on the kitchen table. ARGGH!! This runs a close second on the frustration meter to a drivers door that never, EVER stays open when I park the vehicle, and swing it open to get out. 99% of the time it swings back to hit me in the leg, lol. Sometimes I just sit there and watch it go through the motions ... opennnn, slowly rock back and cloooossse again, right on my foot. The little kick panel at the lower edge of the door is filthy from my shoe pushing it back open.

The rear hatch begs the question - does anyone know if you can sync the rear hatch lock so that it unlocks, say, when the drivers door is unlocked? I haven't seen it on Vag-com.

Thanks -

Rob

There is a setting in the convience section to unlock all doors when you hit unlock. Apparently that is what you need to do for your situation. Your driver door is not working normally. Sounds like you are missing the part that indexes the door to a certain opening. I have never had this issue on either of my Tregs.

I figured it was a mechanical arrangement; just wanted to be sure. Thanks for the update.

From the sound of things, your door stay is bust.

I have the same issue with the driver's door not staying open on the 'detent' on even a slight slope. Door stays open better on the intermediate detent and very poorly on the full open one. I had a very competent body shop look closely at the hinge retention part and they couldn't find anything wrong - every part seems to be working normally. Must be caused by manufacturing variability if it works well on some and not on others. BIG PITA to change out if that was necessary! Sometimes I consider getting a broomstick to prop the door open - LOL!
I had the same issue with the tailgate (the glass part) until I set the convenience controls to unlock ALL doors when drivers door is unlocked. The hatch unlocks too.

Yeah the indexing mechanism is there on my driver's door, but like Fourdiesel, mine doesn't work well. I swing the door open, and unless I do it with EXACTLY the right amount of force - I end up watching it index 1-2-3 to the fully open position, then it slowly indexes 3-2-1 back onto my foot. And that's on perfectly level ground.

I already had the convenience control set to unlock ALL doors - I dunno what's going on but my treg doesn't seem to like to let me access the rear unless I jump through hoops. Maybe it's my imagination, ha ha.
