Without any visible indication, holes, scuffed up paint etc. that they were previously installed? I'm looking at purchasing a used Touareg and not a fan of the running boards.

They are an aftermarket part so it should not be too hard I think.
You are right it makes the car ugly and they are useless

it is pretty easy, a little awkward once you handling this bulky item laying on the ground but not a big deal.

as far as the indications go, the bottom plastic covers on each side would have cutouts for the bracket mounts but those are almost impossible to see without actually looking under the car.

my touareg had the oem ones that i removed.
