Hey, it's me again. You're not gonna believe this. Some lady "fell asleep at the wheel" and plowed my wife in her new '08 Rabbit yesterday morning. Possibly the first totalled '08 Rabbit in the U.S. We haven't even made a payment yet. We don't even have plates yet.

And I know "Safe Happens." So, I'm glad we traded in our '98 Jetta for the '08 Rabbit...

And I am thankful to VW engineers, because there is lots of space around the passenger compartment...

...but can anyone explain why no airbags deployed? They deployed on the Honda that hit her. The car rolled and she managed to get out of the seat belts and the car while upside down.

My wife is still in the hospital as I post this. She seems to be doing OK, and we hope to bring her home tomorrow. But I would feel better about ordering the same vehicle as a replacement knowing there is a good reason for the air bags not deploying.

Any thoughts? Spockcat?

Hi all,

Thanks for the support. I think the VW really does get in to you. Or maybe just more nice people buy VWs.

Anyway, my wife is home from the hospital today. She is sore and has lots of bruises, but it looks like she's going to be OK.

She was struck initially right on
the pillar between the driver's side front and rear doors. The impact caused the vehicle to roll. I only have a hard copy picture of the car upside down or I would have posted it.

I wouldn't expect the front air bags to deploy, but I would expect the side bags to go. Especially since the car rolled.

Here's a better picture...

It's pretty clear to me that she got hit on both doors, although it looks like the rear door got the worst of it.

I tried to e-mail VW, but it wouldn't accept the VIN. Maybe it's too new?

That thing that looks like it might be an airbag is actually one of those sunscreens you put on your dash and windshield. If you look at the interior picture I took, you can see the outline the undeployed airbag on what I now know is called the 'B' pillar.
