"I know there are purists who think "my XX can go anywhere your YY can", but no, you can't argue with physics." - I prefer the latter because I owned straight axle 4x4s and now IFS/IRS rig. You can call us purists, call Touareg master of none, and whatever else you want. It doesn't change what we've come to admire.
For most of us, Touareg fulfills everything we need. If I wanted to measure dicks, I'd go for a 40-inch-Dana60's-v8-roll cage-rockhopper.
But I know how to use my tool without bragging about how big it is.

I'd suspect that a first gen with front and rear locking diffs, air suspension and detachable anti roll bar would do just fine offroading.... so stating with a v10 and doing a few factory retrofits would more than likely be easier and yield a much more versatile rig....

Quoted to clear this up so we can all reference this post as the thread maybe progresses.

There's no dick swinging or "putting down" of your precious metals here. Simply a build, which is a bit unusual, which will hopefully result in a very capable offroad car with an interesting engine.
Less of the sensitivity please, or at least put a rainbow as your avatar so we know what to expect.

Moving on.

Yea I know a guy on here who got an R50 motor just for this to fit to his Nissan patrol 🚓 and then found the V10 too wide for the chassis ?
Cheers

But you never know I suppose
That's a bit concerning, but the measurements I've taken would contradict that for a GQ? Hopefully this isn't the case but thanks for the info.
My main worry is transmission length and the fact it's got a front "dipping" oil pan.

So you're gonna use the v10tdi, the 09D and then the Nissan TC and diffs?
It's a bit of a plan as I go kind of thing until it gets into the full swing of the build, but yes, that's the general idea, except I'd hope to use the VW transfer case if it'll fit.

as you can see, the T looks a bit longer, but the orientations are the same.

How familiar are you with the electronics in the V10? I'd be more worried about getting the extracted hardware to run as needed than the physical bolting/mating/fitting of the stuff.

Not specifically the V10, but yes, the bolting up will be the easy part.
Worst case if all the factory stuff fails, from what I've looked into, I'll be setting up a master/slave ECU arrangement. Pretty similar to what it already has, just without all the weirdness.

Honestly to build something with your bare hands like this, is pretty cool. I don't agree with the project because in my View I would rather build the V10 to make it some crazy overlander, but to each their own.

The integration of electronics would be the most challenging of undertakings.
Mechanical stuff, with proper fab skills, is not an issue.
If you can somehow override/modify ESP and KESSY, among other systems, you might be able to run it with Touareg ECU/TCM.
I've had (still own the car) a turbo project where I used an AEM Infinity stand-alone ECU after piggyback ECU was deemed not viable to run higher boost and larger injectors.
So it is also possible to use a clean slate ECU to mimic Touareg mapping.

Put aside reasons for why you use VW V10, this project could be a real humdinger.

Cheers...

@MAB Innovation has dropped his latest video onto Youtube of the project.

Every content provider needs a 'catch-line' etc..... MAB I think you've nailed it.

I've had a great day today, watching your content, and frothing over Saving Salvage rebuilding the Audi R8. https://www.youtube.com/@SavingSalvage
@snodrogs - that has been an awesome recommendation ;)

If I'm bridging a BOM gap, I'll take that as a pretty big compliment. They make some awesome stuff.

Just briefly reviving this thread for some insight, as I've not been able to find any clear answers. Brace yourselves...

I want to delete the ABS/traction control/airbags/immobiliser from the ECU... I know there have been a few threads about this, but the general consensus is an argument about why you shouldn't do it (because it's not for a 1991 car). The patrol has brake proportioning valves, so no real issues, but I'd like to keep the speed read from the ABS sensors, as I'm upgrading to GU patrol diffs, which have the hardware.

Airbags isn't much of an issue, as I can just match the resistance values, but a software delete is a neater solution for me.

So... Has anyone experienced any tuning software packages or know anyone with some insight into this that isn't angry or anecdotal?

(Next video is in about 8 hours from now)

I didn't know obdeleven existed. I'll look into that. It already seems more versatile than rosstech as they said themselves they can't get into locked systems that obd11 supposedly can.

Anyway... Another questionable episode is out

Spoiler alert... it definitely fits. I'd do the videos more regularly, but I've had to make a schedule to cover 3 months when I'll be away (riding from sydney to england on a motorbike), so that's why progress is wayyyyyy further ahead than the videos imply.

You've got eng and GB mounts to look forward to...
