Brake Light Bulb

I've done a search and can't find any threads that mention the problem I'm experiencing.

2007 Touareg - V6

The instrument panel indicates that I have a brake light problem. I wedge a stick between the brake pedal and the driver's seat and walk around to the back of the vehicle. Indeed, the left brake light isn't working (right one is ok). I remove the stick, remove the brake light assembly and gain access to the bulb. Before replacing the bulb, I do the stick thing again and the light is now working. I leave the stick in place, put everything back together and the bulb remains working. I then remove the stick and the light goes out. The very next time I press the brake pedal, the instrument panel notification comes back on, and indeed the light isn't working again. I repeat the process a few times with the same results (maybe some times it takes multiple presses on the pedal for the light to go out, instead of the first press, but the problem is the same). I have removed and reinstalled the bulb - it seemed to be correctly installed and not loose in the socket. I've tried to move wires around while the bulb is on, but can't get it to turn off. It seems to be that once the light assembly is back in place, the light stops working.

Any ideas?

Have you actually put a new bulb in yet?

If not, do so.

But be VERY careful.

These bulbs have the securing pins at odd angles so be VERY careful a] that you buy EXACTLY the correct bulb [get a pair whilst you are at it] and b] be equally careful you insert the bulb into the socket correctly [some people haven't done so first time].

A bulb doesn't alway go straight to complete failure. Do be sure you get the right replacements or you may damage the bulb holder. I get mine from my dealer. They're cheap enough and correct!

I replaced the bulbs on both sides with new ones, and everything is functioning correctly. Doesn't make sense why taking out two working bulbs and replacing them with two new bulbs fixed the problem, but it does! Thanks for the suggestions.

It is a strange thing but my 2004 did the exact same thing. Rear brake light sensor went on on the dash. Went to the dealer to get a bulb. Got back in the truck and the sensor went off. Brake light was working again. Few hours later sensor came on, light went off again. I think it's just a consequence of the filament in the bulb deteriorating. I'm sure if it was left long enough it would go out for good. The same thing thing happened with my headlights just before one of them burned out. These trucks seem to have a bit of attitude.

Funny, I don't know why either, but good to read that it does the trick!!

I learned two things about bulbs since owning the Touareg.

1. Always replace bulbs in pairs (Left Brake light bad..Replace the Right at the same time)
2. Dont buy cheap bulbs from China. Get the best bulb you can afford. Made in the USA is always a good bet.

It Sod's Law with bulbs.

You often find that once one has gone the other isn't far behind and it's just easier to do them in pairs and have done with it.

It's also why I bought three new stop/tail bulbs from my dealer this week having put in a new pair of cheap bulbs I bought in a hurry when a stop light blew six months ago.

I replaced one bulb that was duff [stop filament blown again], the other that seemed fine, and put the third in the trunk as a spare.

What will happen now is that because I have a spare, the new bulbs will last a very long time whereas if I didn't have the spare, one of the replacements will blow very quickly.

Yes, there is no rational reason for this, but it's what happens!
