Black exhaust?

Was cleaning the car and finally got time to clean out the exhaust some.

There is this black power (looks like soot or something) in and around the lip of the exhaust tips. I got around the lip but the inside is still solid black. It almost looks like brake dust.

At first I thought this was normal carbon.

Just wondering what I should use? I've used degreaser, wheel cleaner, so many things. I've also tried many brushes. Looks like ill need to sand it or use a drill and a wire brush?

I'll get photos soon.

A bit like this (but completely black inside), I'm guessing it's normal?

000 Steel Wool will polish it back up nicely. Used it on the outside of my tips and it worked wonders.

Stay on top of it. The more it builds, the harder it is to clean!

It may or may not scratch it, but using any grade of standard steel wool on stainless will contaminate the surface and cause corrosion to start. Just wait, you will start to get orange staining and pitting.

You might be surprised how well Zippo lighter fluid on an old towel works for this purpose – with no need for scratching. I’m using this for quite some time with decent results. But, as others said, do clean exhaust pipe tips more often and carbon buildup won’t be that hard to remove (monthly works for me). The Bass Pro Shop sells 4 oz. of Zippo for $3.

P.S. Zippo works well for cleaning guns too.

I detailed my Treg today and found a great combo for getting rid of the black exhaust buildup as well as the oxidation on the metal trim around the windows and lower doors. I used Nevr Dull first then used 000 steel wool while the Nevr Dull was still wet. I used a microfiber towel to wipe off the excess before it dried. No scratches and worked like a champ.
