Battery Replacement Surprise

I replaced battery on '14 TDI R-Line yesterday. Before I started taking things apart, I coded the BEM with new battery information to make sure the information was accepted. I took a photo of serial number on VCDS screen before making changes (see photo), the manufacture code was VA0 and 110 ah. Once I got to the battery, SURPRISE!!! The battery installed is not the battery listed in the BEM and it is not a battery I have read anything on forums about (see photo).

What makes this odd is that I purchased the vehicle pre-owned in August '14 with 11k miles, the vehicle was put in service January '14. It did not appear anyone had ever been near the battery compartment before. I would see no reason to replace a battery after 8 months, so could this be a factory error? In the battery photo, what other oddity do you see? (hint cca)

Looks like an OEM VW battery to me. Most aftermarket batteries do not have the indicator window.

Made in Germany which is hard to find in North America, but which would be installed at the factory. Most OEM replacement batteries that the dealer have in stock are not Made in Germany at this point, but will have the correct VW labels on them at least. The plastic case looks like OEM VW battery.

A quick google search finds the part number listed as a real VW/Audi part number. It is a 110AH battery. Even the stored id value in the BEM seems to match up to what is printed next to the QR code.

520AH DIN and 850A SAE listed on the battery. Ok. Although subject to battery design, an approximation of SAE to DIN CCA relationship is SAE = (DIN x 1.5) + 40. Math works out to 820A which is close enough to 850AH for me..

Not sure what the issue is unless you expected to see the word VARTA printed on it.

This Fits Your 2012 Volkswagen (VW) Touareg. Part Number: 000915105DL (4D0915105C; 8K0915105F; 4G0915105E; 5K0915105M; 4F0915105D; 000915105AK; 4E0915091; 4D0915105D; 4E0915105A; 000-915-105-AK; 4D0-915-105-C)

Just had my '13 replaced. Didn't fail after six years, but it was getting weak. The battery listed on the service order is an Audi part number. Also 520 AH, so I don't see anything odd about yours.

P.S. $80 labor, which I thought was reasonable from a dealer.

That's all??!!
My local dealer quoted me 3 hours shop time to change my battery because and I'm quoting here "It's under the drivers seat". Their shop labor rate at the time was $165/hr USD.
I thanked them, offered to pay for the estimate to which they declined to charge, and I went and changed it myself in ~ 45 minutes. That time included a cig/coffee break.

I found the same as the OP....I’ve owned my 2015 T4 TDI R-Line since brand new and just replaced the battery. The original was also a MOLL 110AH which is reflected on the BEM sticker but when I read the original coding it was listed as a Varta 110AH. The dealer supplied me with a VW branded battery but according to the BEM sticker it’s a Varta 110MA. I used an Ancel VD700 to read the manufacture coding, it doesn’t offer the ability to modify the serial number just the manufacturer and AH. Is it really important to change the serial number in a T4?

Curious about the smaller read white wire on the positive cable? Not on my T1. Battery sure looks like a Johnson controls Varta battery. Only on my second battery in 15 years. Never bothered with changing the coding. Excuse my ignorance but what is the benefit?

#7 ·
2005 does not need battery coding as the T1 and the T2 lack the BEM to code.

No real world benefit. The BEM is just a typical exercise in German Over Engineering that actually causes more long term problems then it solves.

Just replaced my 2014 VW Touareg V6 Sport. Battery was stamped July 2013. Nearly made it 9 years, with 92, 300 miles. I'm wondering if the original battery was made in Germany. Does anyone know what the factory installs?
The replacement was an interstate battery. Only warranty for 2-3 years.

Hey, Just curious which battery you put in. It seems that there are multiple batteries would work.

I do not care if you believe what was in my car.
I was only here to figure out what was in it.
But I contacted the service department only an hour after it was taken out.
This is what the service department told me!
It was an exide battery dated July 2013.
Zimbrick VW service Madison, WI.
They/nor I have any reason to be dishonest here! Only trying to help others. Good day :)

That's great, however, you've been lied to.
And here's an FYI.... I just happened to contact Interstate because I was looking at them as an option, but they confirmed that they don't have BEM codes on their batteries which deterred me from taking a zip-tie approach to the replacement.
Hopefully you get just as many years of life out of your better battery.

We list 3 possibilities for this vehicle. Two of them are AGM batteries. If AGM we need to know the length of the battery (either 12” or 14”). If not AGM it should be 12”. Our batteries do not have a BEM code sticker.

The prices are:
MTX-94R/H7 (12” AGM) – $332.10 with old battery exchange
MTX-49/H8 (14” AGM) - $345.10 with old battery exchange
MTP-94R/H7 (12” non AGM) - $268.10 with old battery exchange

Settle down guys. It's great to inform other members of your own experiences, it's great to have faith in the dealership/supplier you use, but please, let's not have pistols at dawn over a battery issue.
Hello Steve,
I do not have a battery issue. I only joined here less than 24 hours ago. Curious of what was generally put in the 2014 VW Touareg V6 Sport gasoline engine, from the factory. I purchased my car in 2018. I was just wondering if it was the original battery. I was happy to hear it lasted nearly 9 years.
My dealership informed me of what they took out, and what it was replaced with. I obviously have confidence in them, for I have been going to them for years. They have absolutely no reason to be dishonest with me. I was just amazed at how long my original battery lasted.
They informed me the Interstate batteries are really good, and may last just as long as the factory installed exide battery.
I only posted what was in my car. For others to compare, what they maybe have in theIr cars. There are quite a few models in this car.

When/where is it appropriate to point fingers and try to make others look bad, without cause/proof otherwise? I do not need to prove anything here. I am disappointed & discouraged to ever post anything anywhere again. I do not need the grief. I have contacted clubTouareg to cancel my membership here.
Take care Steve

You're not trying to educate or help anyone. You came on here and called my dealership liars.
that is not helping at all. They did not lie to me. Do you really think it's helpful to call people liars? My battery in my VW Touareg is An interstate battery. The old one was an exide battery.
and if you don't like the answer too bad.
Good riddance! 😕

Has VW stopped selling batteries to fit TDI Touareg? Since Covid, I have not been driving the 70 miles back and forth to the office. I have noticed over the last few weeks, the T has been cranking really slowly. I am the original poster of this thread, I put a new battery in about 4 years ago.

I was about to offer recent experience but then I realized my "recent" experience is two years old. The Friday before I bought my 2010 from a private seller, he had a local VW dealership install a battery. He put the receipt / work order in the glove box. Even with supply chain issues being what they are, I would still think it strange if a dealer doesn't have a battery.

I didn't buy from my local dealer. I wound up purchasing a Die Hard Platinum from Autozone. An AGM that was made by Johnson Controls. I went this option after reading/talking about the fact that there are only like 3 actual battery manufacturers and that other companies then slap/print their stickers and names on them. Johnson Controls was said to be the largest of the manufacturers.

Yea they get the luck of 2 bolts and a tilt.
Even so the T3 wasn't bad at all.

When I look at the online parts site for VW, I see three different options for my battery (when I input the VIN). What's up with that? I have a '16 Touareg TDI Lux. I was quoted $600+ to change it out, and $321 for just the battery. Other dealerships offer the three batteries at various prices from $170 to $400 depending on the AH they are. Part number listed on the quote is "000915105DL". Why the different AH batteries? A region issue?
