Mother in law's 2008 v8 touareg battery died and was replaced recently. This is the second replacement in the last 2 years. After the most recent replacement the car will start a couple of times and then not start at all. The battery has to be disconnected and reconnected and it will start right up. This has left her stranded multiple times. I've tried my vcds but it is not compatible (2014 passat tdi). Any clues of what this could be?

your vcds should be capable of reading the Touareg. You need a scan to see what’s going on. Seems to be an issue with the KESSY (05) module.

Long shot.
Engine earth strap?
These corrode.

How are you disconnecting the battery?

Are you simply undoing the bolt that holds the battery earth strap down in front of the driver's seat (LHD car).

If so, and the car starts each time, then perhaps a cheap shady tree fix on a 13 yesr old car would be to fit a battery isolator key here.
