Hi Colin, should have been a little bit more specific.

I need to add that I have never seen the plug or the charging method used other than a mention of it in the manual, I guess the plug/wiring would actually protrude from under the seat from factory so no need to move seat and I expect the dealer in their pre delivery would disconnect and drop plug into battery box, it's also possible that they remove it altogether.
Would be happy to be corrected if this is not the case, don't forget that I'm talking about the 7L here. Maybe they've done away with this in later models, anyhow I got my new Varta battery which I plan to install soon so will have a look to see if the plug is there and post a pic to clarify  .

Grant,

Thanks, but I'm fully sorted with my 12V charging needs, have more stuff than I need.
Just joining in the discussion and trying to help others to gain a better understand on what, how and where.

I'm looking at replacing the battery in my 7P 180 TDI. I was wondering if any one has replaced their AGM battery with a lithium one? I came across this in my wanderings and thought it might make aa suitable replacement.

Lithium Car Battery 12V Stop Start 1420amp 60Ah | iTechworld
Hi Tim, I am really interested to hear how the iTech battery performed. I am particularly interested to see if it is compatible with the Touareg charger and electronics.
I have 2 iTech 120s in my caravan and they are great.

I wish I could help, but the car battery has been behaving itself and I haven't gotten around to it. I also have 3 of those Itech 120's in my motorhome, and as you say, they are great.

I realise that this is an older post I was just wondering exactly how the Alternator output satisfies the constant current constant voltage charge requirements for a LiFePo4 battery. also the fact that the charge shuts off when the battery is fully charged unlike the lead acid batteries that continue to accept a trickle charge.. and what effect does the battery's almost constant voltage characteristic of 13.4 to 14.2 Volts until its almost 70% discharged.... considering that the smart alternator (ECU controlled) reduces the voltage to under 13.2 volts once it senses a battery voltage of less than that. In spite of what Itech world say about their battery the BMS system can only prevent battery overcharge if the battery input voltage is above above 14.6 volts the trickle charge is nominally 13.4 volts for a Lead Acid battery - with I LiFePo4 the input of a constant trickle charge current of around 1 amp ac cause cell damage.

I talked to my local specialist battery supplier here in Melbourne who has conventional, AGM and Lithium batteries ( not Itechworld however) for my 7P. My 2013 V8 came originally with a conventional flooded Varta battery. I replaced it with a Korean AGM battery for about the same cost as a Varta or Bosch replacement conventional battery and this has worked without problem. He was not confident of the compatibility of any of his Lithium batteries and did not believe it was worth the cost in any case.

cheers

Must be a reason why lithium aren't provided as standard by VW and other manufacturers, cost side.... Despite the apparent weight and power benefits.
Best to have a DC to DC charger to manage such installations for additional battery ie lithium.
But replacing main battery with lithium without understanding what j367 BMC unit does could result in some complications

The transport mode button is in the driver side door pocket just push and hold for a couple of seconds
I have this button on my 7L & 7P, it is used to turn off the interior motion and tilt alarm only. Has nothing to do with the battery. It is used when transporting the vehicle on a tilt tray truck or when using ferries in rough seas. It is also useful for when you leave a dog inside the vehicle. If you catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry , the loading attendants will ask you to activate it to stop alarms going off during the voyage.

On the subject of batteries. When the battery on my 2019 CR eventually needs replacing will the smarts tell me or will it just be dead one day?

I don't think it will tell us explicitly @Imor2624 ie no message will be displayed in the VC to alert, but we will experience symptoms.
I suggest get a battery test done in 5yrs from new.
Battery on my V8 7p was fine after 6 yrs and in the 7l V10 both batteries were fine after 12yrs and it still had original starter battery after 16yrs

That's a great battery life were that AGM batteries? I wonder what is so different about their charging system than other marques.

Indeed, sold the V10 after 16yrs and it was still working, starting well.
AGM in the boot ie starter battery.
Factory Twin battery system was great, if battery was exhausted etc then turn the key other way and use other battery to start.
Look ahead to the same setup in the California
