The Astray cover was slightly stuck. I tried to slide it open to access the 12v socket and accidentally popped it off. I spent 15 minutes trying to reinstall the cover with no success. Any one with similar experience? Any suggestion as how to reinstall the cover back properly. Appreciate any help. Thanks

spockcat has a write-up in the DIY section on how to install keyless start. Use this DIY for instructions on how to disassemble the center console. If you remove the gear lever surround, the ashtray just slides out. You can then put the cover back on and re-assemble.

It's not a big job. Shouldn't take more than 1/2 hour really.

I had an issue where I accidentally popped the cover off--could not get it on. Had the CPO warrenty and the dealership ordered and installed a new one. From what I remember I don't think there is a way to pop it back on without breaking it. I think there were some posts on here a while back about this.

Okay, so I just reinstalled the piece, but it doesn't slide like it used to - it just kind of sits on the tracks, limply. We'll see when I drive it, but I have a feeling it will just slide back and forth - there's no resistance. Is there a missing spring or something?

Hi guys.

I have had the same experience. Slider popped off as I had too much coin in the tray. I have read the instructions on removing the whole concole and re-inserting the slider but this proved to be really difficult and it is hard to do without breaking something.

I found the easiest way is to take remove the wood cover from its black plastic base. That way the base is more pliable. You can then insert this onto its tracks very easily. Then just pop the wood cover back on and secure it via its keyhole attachments.

Hello everyone,

Well, I did it. Popped the ashtray cover off somehow just so I can use the stupid electrical socket. Same case as racer.

Thankfully some of you have gone through this situation before so I can draw on your experience. Thanks scottimac for your tip. If you're still around and remember, can you please give me a bit more detail on how you did it? Did you have to go through the center console removal procedure anyway?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hey all. Thought I'd share my experience. Mine's a Touareg is a 2008 V6 3.0 TDI 7L.

I managed to get the slide mechanism to function with the spring action working. There 's a little copper piece that's coiled up. Probably deep into the dash somewhere if it's popped off. At least, that's where mine was. This needs to be hooked on the bit between the bottom tray and the wood grain piece.

Easier if you disconnect and remove the part completely imo.
