Hi Everyone,

I'm getting the conversation started for the upcoming Apple CarPlay. I am definitely interested in getting this set up in my 2011 TDI exec if at all possible.
Apple - CarPlay
Engadget video:

Here is what we know so far for possibilities.

Pioneer - Looks like they will be the first to support aftermarket CarPlay. Their supported models are AVIC-8000NEX, AVIC-7000NEX, AVIC-6000NEX, AVIC-5000NEX, AVH-4000NEX. It will be available through a firmware update. Does anyone have one of these units installed already? Thoughts about the hardware?

Pioneer CarPlay

Alpine - rumoured to be developing an aftermarket system...still just a rumour however.
Alpine Planning to Release Aftermarket CarPlay Console This Fall - Mac Rumors

Please share your thoughts about CarPlay or experiences with the Pioneer decks.

Thanks!

I'm interested but not for my T3. Maybe down the road. As for Pioneer, I had an AVIC D3 in my T1 (pics in my gallery). Was a great unit and I had it installed since my T1 had the base radio (limited functionality).

I do think Apple's approach is good. VW has been silent about CarPlay but hopefully it will be involved. Car makers are usually agnostic about this stuff.

A good friend has that Pioneer in his Audi A4. He loves it. It would be a great solution for your T1, Phoenix. A good installer will have access to a matching trim kit, too. I had a Scosche trim kit on my T1.

Given how the T3 is designed, I don't see how a third-party radio would work. Maybe CarPlay would work via Aux or USB.

I need to read up on CarPlay.

I have a first gen Pioneer App Radio sitting in my garage... Had it in my 2010. Worked great overall. I wish there was a nice way to do upgrades on the T3s.

I had a pioneer AVIC-910BT in my 2006 before spending the dough to install the RNS-510. The AVIC worked and was much better than the plain radio, but the RNS-510 is much, much better. More stable, larger screen with less clutter, etc...

That said, I'm thinking about a new pioneer so I can do CarPlay. :(

Has anyone installed a Pioneer CarPlay stereo into Touareg?

We are wanting to install the Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX into my '08 Touareg.
We just want to know if anyone has had any issues doing this. Looks like we can purchase the wiring interface to keep the steering wheel controls working, hopefully. But we're wondering about errors and the computer locking up if we don't follow the proper instructions.
Feeling confident, just wondering if anyone else has any experience they can share.

Thanks!

We did it!
We got the radio, wiring harness, sirius tuner and all the trim pieces, etc from Crutchfield.
I hooked everything up beforehand at the dining room table. Called Crutchfield to make sure everything was matched up correctly. Glad I called because a couple things weren't labeled the way you'd think (one being the 'remote' wire).
They were extremely helpful and patient!
We tried to reuse the existing sirius antenna so that we had one less wire to run throughout the car. But it didn't work. Maybe with some more effort and research... But we just said nah... And went with the new one. Ended up running through the ceiling, and coming out at the top middle point of the hatch. Sticking the magnetic antenna right behind the car antenna, so far so good.
The gps antenna is on the passenger side dash. And the Bluetooth microphone is on the right hand side of the driver's visor. I don't use it much, so so far that hasn't been an issue. I may have to move it to the secondary visor if so.
Getting everything into the space where only a radio came out of was NOT fun. It barely worked!
One MAJOR issue was that the trim piece around the stereo DID NOT FIT with the radio. The tabs on the top and bottom couldn't depress enough to get into the space with the radio there. We had to sand down the tabs to lose 1/2"-3/4" of the total height of the tabs plus radio. Not really what we wanted to do, but it's the only thing that would work to get everything in.
Oh and one other thing, kind of a big thing - but maybe this is common.
If you want to add a dvd monitor for the back seat, or a back up camera, or anything else at a later date..... Anything that would require you to get to the back of the stereo again.... You CAN'T.
We even called Pioneer.... How do you get this stereo back out??? Unless you're going to take apart your dashboard... The only way is to break the trim piece. Yes the one that you had to modify. Wow. So, I'd attach those wires NOW and hide them somewhere under the glove box if you may need them later. Wish we had!

In the end, once we FINALLY got everything installed the only issue we had was the Airbag light was on.
"Airbag Fault"

Talked with 3 mechanics, they all said VAGCOM and get code cleared, $100 please.
Talked with the dealership service manager, he said it could be the K-line, that VWs are notorious for having issues with with aftermarket stereos. And if it IS that, it could possibly be on forever. No way to clear it.
Crutchfield and wiring harness company had NO idea. Never heard of it. Funny how all the mechanics did tho!
Called another, mechanic he also said K-line, but that that is usually an issue with older VWs. For me to come in he'll check the code.
Ended up being the light for the 'Passenger Airbag Off' button below the stereo. Because it was unplugged with the harness, it hadn't reset.
4.5 minutes later and no $ exchanged I was good to go.

I hope this is helpful for someone else!!

Finally got the right harness, volume on steering wheel works. Routed the usb cable under mid-console to the box under the armrest.

Time to mount it, but the screws holding the unit in the adapter frame have not enough clearance to pass the frame in the car. Not even close. Gluing the frame to the HU now, will try to mount it again in the morning.

By following the instructions I glued the HU upside-down in the frame. Thankfully I got it loose again and glued it the other way around. It's now mounted and working nicely.

Hows the backup camera software on that? Does it show the moving trajectory lines, like the ones on the OEM? I find those more than helpful when reversing with a boat attached, as it shows where I am headed and at what angle to the boat and buildings around me.

update: at least once a week when my phone is connected with CarPlay, Siri won't work. When i push the phone's button to speak, it cuts me off. The only thing I've found that fixes it is to do a hard reset on the phone (push the two buttons at once until the apple shows).
It's very annoying. I couldn't say if it's a Pioneer issue, Apple issue, or combo.

Thinking about getting the appradio 4. Is it true I can't use maps while listening to music? I would be using iPhones map while listening to iTunes Radio for example.

Also, I have the back up cam right now with navigation head unit, anyone know if I will be able to use the oem camera and wiring and basically just plug into the pioneer head unit? I heard there were proprietary issues in the past.

And finally, what will I lose on my dash display? It shows radio stations and street locations right now, so I'm assuming that won't be present, but anything else? What will it show for location and radio stations instead?
