I ask, as I suspect the one I just bought has a DPF, but from what I can make out reading the forum, DPF's weren't fitted till later?

Thanks! Can't check now though, and it may be moot as the Treg's been picked up fom the workshop it was taken to when it broke down on me the other day, and has been taken back to Auckland. My purchase price refund is due. Unless the dealer can convince me it will be properly fixed. I've only driven it 300km when it wouldn't start again, workshop found it had a fair amount of diesel in. Bit disappointed, but at least it happened now and not in three months when out of dealers warranty. I suspected the car had DPF as looking at net images of the Treg DPF and under the car, and the fact that twice in its last 70km it blew out massive clouds of blue grey smoke twice for about half a minute each time, i thought this car had a DPF. Workshop says it hasn't so the clouds must be related to the diesel in the engine oil. Thanks for the responses guys.

Hmmm...football aside, the car dealer wouldn't take the car back and give me a refund as it's under warranty, so it wasn't as easy as just having them take it back sadly! He said he would get it fixed for me. That's nice as I really liked the car, but given the advice on here I would have preferred the refund. So what has happened? Well, The vehicle went to a VW dealer workshop in Hamilton, not Auckland, and there they fitted new injector seals: orings and copper ones, and new injector stretch bolts were brought in from overseas. The old ones were poor I collected the car and did 119km that evening, mostly highway driving. Checked the oil that night whilst engine warm but after sitting for half an hour, the oil level had increased to above the conical shape on the dipstick. I didn't drive it the next morning, instead phoned the dealer who said they wanted to see it. So a 30 mile drive to them, they advised the level was "up a bit" but I could drive it home again but no really long distances. It ran like a charm for another 120km but next day it wouldn't start again (hydraulicing I expect) and back to the dealer it has gone on a flatbed. So what's causing the diesel fuel getting into the oil? Any one able to shed some light on it? The next plan of attack is for them to work on the fuel pump apparently. The block was replaced 3000 miles ago, so I'm wondering if this problem existed prior to that work (it was replaced due to a conrod escaping its confinement by going through the block). Anyone had the same thing happen with a R5? I just feel the dealers aren't familiar and they have told me they currently have the car on hold whilst awaiting further info on its previous engine work from 3000ml ago.

Thanks for that 4ePikanini. 6 days after being uplifted and with no work begun on the truck I got a bit grumpy with the dealer by email and made noises along the lines of going to Court. Thankfully by that afternoon the VW dealer had hold of a new tandem pump and the next day (when I visited their workshop) they were working on the car. It is expected ready for me in the next couple of days, following testing over 24 hrs once repair is completed.

I really like the car in itself, with its obviously concerning fault aside, so I hope it can be fixed before any damage is done: motor sounds great, unlike other R5's I drove leading up to purchasing this one which had noisy tappets/injectors when under even slight load (like a mild incline even). So hopefully the repair is a success. Once it's going I'll post a picture, not that there is anything different about my truck to the norm, is just a metallic blue/grey. I did manage to buy a second hand deep plastic tray with "Touareg" moulded in it but that will be sum total of dress-up, and I think it has a aftermarket exhaust.

If not the tandem pump, and not the injector seals, what might be other causes of diesel getting into the engine oil?

Thanks for your attentions guys. There doesn't seem to be a lot of knowledge down here in New Zealand for these R5's. Certainly there's not under my scalp...but I'm trying to learn!

Well, an update. Some of you good folk may remember I bought a R5 Touareg here in New Zealand in early June this year, and it broke down on me twice within the first few days, its motor wouldn't turn over, leaving me stranded. The injector seals were replaced, then the tandem pump. The fault was found to be a cracked fuel rail in the head, and the head was replaced in October at last. Right back at the start of my ownership I asked the dealer for a full refund, but he would not, - desiring instead to investigate the fault with a view to repairing it for me. I didn't want the truck back. It took till yesterday, but I finally received my $20,000nzd purchase price back, plus a $3000nzd compensatory payment. Thanks for the input from you guys back at the start, where some of you said to pass on this vehicle. Even after the new head was fitted I still refused the vehicle due to the amount of blow-by the engine was chucking out the oil filler, - and the block was only 3000km old as the original block had blown apart and a re-ringed replacement had been fitted (but the original cracked head had then been put onto it, so even 3000 km of travelling with the engine oil being diluted by diesel fuel must have taken its toll on the reconditioned block, as the blow-by was checked by an independant diesel specialist workshop and found to be too excessive for a new motor. Hence I'm now Touareg-less! What am I going to do for a forum now? Thanks chaps, I appreciate your input.
