We bought a '16 Lux VR6 last week and it is fantastic. Everything but the headunit's center button.

It is missing the black insert and looks terrible. It sticks out like a sore thumb especially at night when the whole white area shines brightly. I've searched and the button itself is not available without the main display unit attached. Those go for $350+ used which is just too expensive for just a button insert.

Any ideas where I can find a broken head unit for harvesting this little plastic piece, or other ideas (besides black stickers, etc)?

Have a similar problem with the auto button for the climate control. Cant find the cover anywhere.
Ordered the black stickers for T1 and will try and fix with a clear plastic first and sticker on that.
I've thought of that but I know I just wouldn't be happy. I'd like to see the results when you do this.
I found a few units in junk yard a while back - they were damaged, but good for harvesting plastics, though. A trip to junkyard might help. If not, sound like Ebay / CraigList to the rescue.
You actually found a few damaged RNS-850 headunits? I searched junk/breaker yards all around the southeast and there are no wrecked RNS 850-equipped Touaregs to be found. eBay has no non-functioning units either. I can't believe I'm putting this much effort into this...

I'd be doing exactly the same. OCD is a very hard thing to live with, especially if that is right in from of your eyes every time you drive. I did a walk through a few junkyards in Denver and saw two rear ended Touaregs that had not been chopped up into pieces yet, where front units could have been recovered. Leave a note or so with local places, maybe one will come along that you could salvage from.

Have you tried looking for specific part number in the catalog?

I've only looked in the obvious places (online parts from dealerships) to find no button on its own. Just the whole radio/nav unit. Is there a catalog with more? Where would this be? I doubt they would explode out button part numbers, much less the button caps, you know?

Having dug through service manuals ... it is sold as a unit and there are no separate spare parts that I can locate. For older year models, buttons were sold separately, but not the knob. Best bet is junk yard if you can put an order in for something like this, or getting hands on damaged unit sold online. I found a few units that were sold online for ~200 $ (damaged screen, not that you care) but none are available right now (at least cannot find any damaged ones).

This is my $2 fix of the auto button. Took a white plastic cap and cut it the right size with a scalpel, then cut the sticker the right size. Glued the cap in place and put the sticker on.
Nothing you will notice unless you now about it, definitely good enough for me and a major improvement over having no cover.

Any luck finding a replacement? Just lost mine and can't find a replacement.
I put in an order for replacement stickers from a Canadian company six weeks ago. I requested custom 14mm circles. They have not returned emails but they took my money so I hope to get some soon. Not sure what I’m going to use for an insert. The Coke bottle cap seems like a great idea.
