Anyone Drag Race Their Touareg?

Went to a car show at the local Dragstrip Saturday and they were letting people make as many runs as they wanted for $10. I haven't drag raced in about 5 years so the temptation was too great. Now this is only an 1/8 mile track so keep that in mind. My Touareg is a 2007 V10 TDI absolutely box stock. Best time was:
60ft - 1.942 sec
660ft - 6.024 sec
1/8 mile - 9.428 @ 72.044

I made 5 runs which were: 9.478, 9.490, 9.428, 9.548, 9.640. These were basically back to back runs, I was just doing laps and as the engine (and trans) got hotter the times fell off. Temps were right at 90 degrees on Saturday so it would probably have run slightly quicker in cooler weather.

Lots of fun and not bad times for my tow vehicle. For those that are curious the 9.42 equates to about a 14.6 in the quarter mile.

Norm.

The trap speed only dropped by off by 1 mph so not much HP was being lost. The engine temps stayed right at 200 but the trans temp started to climb so I drove it around the parking lot for 5 minutes to cool it off and then parked it. This thing would make a heck of a bracket car. I need to save up for a tune, there is no reason it shouldn't run 8's in the 1/8 and 13's in the 1/4.

I have wanted to but haven't yet. What was your 1/4 mile speed?

I didn't run 1/4 mile only 1/8. Best 1/8 mile mph was 72.133 which if I put that through an online convertor shows a 1/4 mile mph of approximately 92 mph. I suspect that with the aerodynamics of the Treg that it might be closer to 90 mph though.

Yep absolutely factory stock, stock exhaust, DPF's, cats, even down to the VW air filter elements. The Treg has 70K miles and I haven't cleaned the gunk out of the intakes yet either so I would imagine that there is more there to be had even stock. It's my daily driver and tow vehicle for the track car so it will never be a serious drag racer but I do intend to remove the DPF's and get a tune in the not too distant future. I may even remove and clean the intakes if I get time.

Chris if I had the nerve to power brake to a higher rpm I think it would have launched even harder. As it was I just loaded it against the brakes to probably about 1/4 throttle and floored it as I came off the brake pedal. The Treg launches exactly the same on the street not even a chirp from the tires. :(

Wow, I have been able to chirp all four (traction control OFF) on the street using a similar power brake method. I wonder what the difference is. I too have over 70K miles and loads on intake gunk.

It's not like it spins and spins but will give a solid squeal from all four if you power brake it then take off like an F-14 off of an aircraft carrier.

Also, I've noticed better performance with lesser than WOT than with WOT for some reason. Stock tune may just be dumping way too much fuel into the cyls in WOT, no idea. I just know its identical to the behavior I saw on my track car while it was getting tuned, when it was dumping too much fuel in the beginning after swapping to larger injectors.

What was your 60 ft time? And what was your mph? MPH is a good indicator of power if your MPH is low then you know something is killing the power output of the motor. If your 60 ft time is slow then you need to work on your technique for leaving the starting line. Buzzard's technique will give you optimum or close to optimum quarter mile times, just don't be scared of getting hard on the gas. :D

Left foot brake, right foot on throttle to 12/1400 rpm- when tree goes green, off with left and bury the throttle
in drive not sport.

Sport keeps it in gear longer but the torque is lower in the rev range.
Oh and empty everything, even your big rubber mats and have about 1/4 of a tank of deisel.
You also get a 0/ 60 mph time of 5.7 secs.......

I cant recall my 60' time but my MPH was 91. My launches were definately terrible, i just realized i didnt turn off the esp but wonder if it would have made a difference as i didnt see the light flash. It felt like there wasnt any boost in first gear because second gear was a slingshot! Time to get a vag-com.

91 mph is about right so you are getting the power you should. I forgot to turn off ESP when I ran and still got 1.9 sec 60 ft times which is a nice hard launch. I think you need to go play in a deserted parking lot and practice holding your left foot on the brake while bringing the revs up with your right foot. I doubt it's an issue with your tune but it could be.

No production car was ever designed to be drag raced
But they turn up in their droves to every event

No production car needs to go any faster than the speed limit of it's residing country
But every day people exceed the speed limit

If you don't want to read about vehicles being used how the owner wants to use them, then read the title of the thread and don't enter.

On a public forum of course you are entitled to your opinion

To back your theory, I would never buy saloon car that had been used for driving off road every day.

Tell you what, Denker, I'll drag race the crap out of my T3 tdi, then when I'm done with it, and ready to sell it, you can pay market rate for a private party T3 tdi in excellent, stock condition... MMMMkay? It won't do no harm to anything, those track sessions. Makes it more valuable, discovers the weakest link, on your dime, eh?

Your posts are welcome Buzzard.

Isn't 91 MPH on the slow side for 15.1 seconds?

I ran a 15.12 quarter mile but my speed was 99 MPH. Stock V8 FSI (except exhaust).

I did just as Nick described on the launch but only achieved a 2.16 sec. 60 ft. time. I completed one run because I didn't want to thrash my 55K SUV too much.

Maybe my higher speed was due to less torque but more HP higher in the powerband than the V10?
