Another stripped oil pan plug- need advice

First off, I apologize the long read.

I know this is an issue with the gorillas at the dealers. I have also read most, if not all of the oil pan issue threads. My story is sort of the same, but with a twist and I need some advice.

The dealer, about 3-4 years ago stripped the upper oil pan plug. I noticed oil underneath the car, brought it back to the dealer, went back and forth with the service manager and got him to fix it (helicoiled). Helicoils are ok if something isn't going to be messed with constantly, like a head bolt and such. Oil pan plugs are constantly fiddled with and they just don't last.

Yesterday, while getting my oil changed (free for the me at the dealer), the service advisor comes in and says "Come with me- I've got bad news." Well, the helicoil stripped out and they can't get a new one in. Of course, the first words out of his mouth are "New pan is $2700. I'm sure the service manager will be willing to work with you." I'm sure.

I talk with the SM and he 's that it's a wear and tear item, so it's the customer's responsibility. He agreed with me that the helicoil is a temporary fix, but the remedy is a new oil pan. "We'll credit you $350 from the repair cost."

I'm borderline livid. Since they screwed the pooch in the first place and gooned the pan up and their fix hasn't worked, I would assume that it's on them to take care of it. His line of the oil pan is essentially a consumable item I don't buy- I have two Alfa Romeos that are 29 and 38 years old, they have aluminum pans but they've never been stripped... Somehow, in the dealers way of thinking, this is my fault. They are they only ones in the life of the car that have changed the oil and touched the plugs.

Need some options- I really don't want to shell out for a new pan. some of you have run into this before and have come up solutions- expandable rubber plugs, brazing a nut to "extend" the threads out, another insert like a helicoil... Small Claims?

The SM said he would get back to me. They are paying for a rental car right now, but I don't know how long this will last.

Your collective advice is always welcomed. Thanks.

They broke it, they should fix it...Actually, they should have put in a new pan when they screwed it up the first time, since a helicoil is not a VW part.

This company makes more permanent inserts for pans and sparkplugs ++ TIME-SERT Official Threaded inserts for stripped threads, threaded inserts, thread repair stripped sparkplug's, Ford sparkplug blowouts, threaded inserts threaded, repair stripped threads, stripped threads, inserts threaded inserts, Ford spark plu. And they make the 24mm size for a Touareg V8. Not the first time a "tech" has bodged a plug.
You might also get away with a rubber expansion plug as a kluge, but I have had these seep oil.

Get the necessary forms for the small claims filing. They conceded fault when they agreed to attempt the 'temporary' helicoil repair. It didn't work (obviously) and I presume you are able to show that no one else BUT this dealer has changed the oil since. The claim should be for $2700 (the new oil pan) + labor to remove and replace the pan at the VW published rates plus the return of the court costs ie the filing fee + cost to serve the paperwork.

Sorry to hear about your problem. I have change oil on my V8 a few times and can only wonder what went wrong in that shop. These are big bolts on the oil pan and it never crossed my mind that you land in this situation. I really hope you can get the pan replaced at no cost.

Here's where we are with the repair.

I had called several times on Friday and since I received no reply, I pretty much gave up on them. Low and behold, at 6pm, I get a call from the Service Advisor. Many apologies, aside, he told me that they want to do right and they were looking for a tap set and they will be talking with their Rep- didn't say anything other than that. They told me to swing by tomorrow and pick a loaner and return the rental.

OK. Got to the dealer the next day to do the hostage swap with the cars- they told me to stay in the rental. Got them to write down that the rental was for long term use and they were covering it. Picked up my keys, little friendly chit chat with the SA... he said they were going to take care of things. Also got them to print out all the records of the car- oil changes, services, etc....

We'll see what happens next. That's where we are right now.

Update: At the two week mark of the car being at the dealer, I called and no-one returned my call.. I called yesterday and talked to the SA- told me that he was taken off the service for the Treg and the SM was no handling the case. He put me on hold and went to check on the car- came back and said the car was going to be ready in the next day or so... Ummm, OK. Not bad news, but not great news either.

I get to work this AM, a couple of meetings and there is a msg on my phone- it's the SA. Told me that whatever they did to fix it didn't work and they're GOING TO PAY FOR THE PARTS AND LABOR FOR A NEW PAN!!!

Holy crap- I didn't ever have to raise my voice!

Hypothetically speaking- if they're going to pull the engine and change out the pan, what else should I have fixed? Belts/pump/tensioner were done DEC 2012. Plugs need to be changed. Alternator is holding it's own.

Changed my oils a couple of days ago and plug started leaking. Tried a new plug but still leaks. We cleaned the hole and found a helicoil that leaked from outside. Yeah, nice temporary fix , thanks. Really wanted to make a 20L oil change. Now it seems that either i need to change the pan or make a M16 bolt fit. I dislike both, but atleast now it doesn't leak. We used a huge copper casket for nissan plug and that seems to seal it for now. Next oil change will be from upside with suction.
