Hi Guys! I need some quick advice! My wife wants to keep the stock 19's and I want a more sporty look with some All terrains. BUT I AM LIMITED on choices! I found some A/T that will fit my stock 19" wheels - Goodyear A/Ts with Kevlar. The tires are 255/60 (basically a 31x10). I wanted to make sure they will fit before I order them. I think I can go to a 31.5...These will clear with no rubbing, correct? THANKS!

Don't go by the inches....tread pattern might actually cause it to rub....even different tires from the same manufacturer and same size in inches can differ.....guess you would have to try first and find out maybe?

Hi, my experience. Trying to find suitable 19" off-road tyres (tires for you) is difficult.
I took the 'usual' route and went for 18's. In trying to get width and toughness, I went for GY silent armors (also with Kevlar, or aramid fibre) in 265/60R18. The diameter of these is 775mm and they did rub a little on full lock and didn't clear the intercooler vents by much. In hindsight, 255/60R18 would have been better.
Now, mine is a T2 with air. Diameter for the standard 275/45R19's is 729mm.
Now getting to the point of what you were asking... the 255/60R19's are 790mm. I think this is too big. Fitting larger diameter, apart from the rubbing will probably adversly affect your fuel consumption and the vehicle will feel as though it is struggling a bit. I've been caught by this before & kind of forgot. (duh) Yes, it's even noticeable in the V10.
I love my 19" wheels and suspect I will revert to them if I can find a suitable tyre.
Most unfortunately are only a 2-ply sidewall. Finding an LT spec tyre in 19" is hard.
Even the Cooper Zeon LTZ, available in 255/55R19 (762mm) has only a 2-ply sidewall.
(extra rubber on the shoulder... but)
To sum up, I would recommend no larger than the 255/55R19's and if you can get better than a 2-ply sidewall, tell me about it.
I include a pic of my SA's showing the clearance, remember these are 775mm dia. Also, what happens to a 2-ply sidewall if you are not careful or drive too fast, Cheers, Dub

YOUR TREG LOOKS AMAZING!!!!, and wow that is some nasty damage, how'd you do that? surely speed wasn't all that happened!

Dirt road. Actually the infamous Gibb River Road, although the section where this happened was pretty good. So much so, that with the camper trailer on the back the speed crept up to 100kph - hot day too. That's the trouble with a V10 & air suspension, it just want to GO..... After that, & with good advice, on dirt I didn't exceed 80kph and dropped the pressure from 36 to 32psi. (43 on tarmac). Live & learn - or you hope you do. Dub

I am glad your alright, that would have been awful had it blown while you were driving.

I was driving.... 100 clix and on a bend, but slowed and pulled up with no drama, probably due in no small part to the ESP. Dub

Good luck with the new tyres. Have you noticed and rubbing on full lock? In my case this became less noticeable as the tyres wore on (they have now done about 18500 klms and appear to be about half worn.) Possibly mine were more susceptible to rubbing due to the size(?) of the air (suspension) cylinders. Having said all that.. yours does look good now.
Cheers, Dub

My wheel and tires

So I was gonna give some input on the tire options, cause I love the aggressive look of my tires. I just bought the car a couple weeks ago (2008), so I went out to look at what I had. I discovered that a previous owner had swapped out the 19" rims it came with, for VW 18" rims. Oh Snap!! The tires I have on them are Nitto Terra Grappler 255/60R18 112S. They ride great and are quite quiet. Now I'm just surprised someone choose to go to 18" rims in the past and I'm not sure why.

The smaller the rim, the higher the sidewall which improves the ride quality - going bigger is ONLY about bling looks unless it's used for track days.

My Touareg had 19" OE wheels with summer tyres so I bought a set of 17" for my winter tyres, the ride improvement on 17" is noticeable - when both sets of tyres need replacement I plan to use 17" All-Seasons.

As above a previous owner did you a favour when fitting 18 inch wheels.

Now you will have a wider choice of cheaper tires that are more comfortable and, if you fit winters or ATs, will perform better too.

Those taller sidewalls also make the tire & wheel combo more damage-resistant. An ultra-low profile tire is much more likely to suffer curb damage, pot hole damage, etc.

If you ever parallel park by ear, the tire will touch the curb before the rim.

I’m using 255x55x19 General Grabber AT3 all terrains on my T1 V10, they are very hard wearing, wearing very evenly, and look great, they are good on dry tar, great in snow and mud, not brilliant in rain but overall they are very good

Pirelli AT+ 255/55 x 19.

Have 20,000 Km on them, very good all rounder on and off bitumen. Very happy on Dirt roads, haven't bothered with any hard core stuff and my own view is once you get to that specialised type of travel the most suitable tyres don't belong on the black top. I'll be buying these again, I don't see I have anything to gain from brand hopping if I have no complaints.

19" wheels aren't suitable for offroad use that is serious enough where you need to air down... but are fine if you aren't doing anything that would require airing down. There isn't enough sidewall to allow the tire to flatten out, or to protect the wheel. My Touareg came with 19" wheels but I ended up getting 17s to mount ATs, and keep the 19s for when I'm not offroad.

There are degrees of extreme. If I were using 17" to their maximum offroad capacity and had the chassis flexibility to keep them on the ground I'd be using beadlocks but you can partially air down 17" without issues. Equally you can sensibly air down a 19" as long as you don't think you are in a specialist rock hopper and need to get that much extra traction.

This whole thing is prevalent in Australia where owners kit themselves out to climb the side of Everest and then spend 95% of their time driving to work. Some world locations require snow tyres and people fit them for the season, I'd be far more inclined to have separate wheels and tyres for terrain that requires airing down than drive daily on tyres with huge sidewalls that totally ruin the otherwise acceptable handling of the Touareg.
