VW fluid specs are really specific, so anything officially meeting the exact VW spec is fine, but you need to be 100% sure it actually meets the spec, i.e. the VW spec number is actually written on the bottle somewhere. You can't assume that the same fluid used for the same basic transmission is still compatible in a different application, because they will often swap out specific friction materials that change the corresponding fluid requirements.
I once made a mistake using the transmission fluid that was spec'd for an Audi that had the same transmission as my Porsche, and it didn't shift properly anymore- it turns out Porsche had substantially modified the transmission for the specific application, despite being almost an identical unit. In that case it was a manual and they were using a different syncromesh design, but the principle of being 100% certain to not waste time and money still applies.
The IDParts blog has a pretty good table of what fluids each VW model needs:

Honestly, I find this stuff frustrating and after wasting my time and money on a mistake, I'm no longer willing to risk using the wrong thing for something that is only changed every decade or so... I usually just find the best price I can on VW OEM fluids online and go with that.
