Air Suspension harsh ride

So i got my sand rail buried in the sand and grabbed the treg to tow it out. I let a friend drive the treg back to camp and he hit a pretty good size drop. Enough that it needed an alignment after. However im afraid that it may have done some unseen damage as the treg now seems to be riding harsh and it’s as if the damper isn’t working? The suspension will still raise and lower but if you set it on sport or auto or comfort there is no difference in ride. Other then the fact that it will lower into sport mode. The air shocks look fine though. Is there any way to test the shock and see if its working properly or has anyone experienced this issue or have any ideas what to look for? Thanks

I hooked up the vag to it this morning. It actually had crash data stored thinking it had crashed! I cleared everything thinking this may have kept it in some sort of limp mode.. its still riding harsh. I have inspected everthing top from bottom and all seems to be fine.. the only thing i can think is internaly there is a problem in the shock.

Is there any sort of fluid for dampining in the shock? Maybe it leaked out? Is this rubber on top supposed to inflate further? I cant remember..

It almost sounds like your damping and not the height, is permanently set in Sport Mode.

I'm assuming you checked your tire pressures after the incident? I once had low pressure on one tire, and was amazed at how it degraded the ride quality.

Like Depiry wrote though, check all your rubber bushings, linkages, etc..

It has to be something internal becuase everything visable looks fine.. bushings..sway bar..etc.. I wonder if there is some way for the control module to come disconnected? I even checked the fuse for the suspension and its fine.. guess im stuck taking it to the dealer and seeing if they can help.

Hate to be in your shoes. If all scanning passes, visual inspection passes, tire pressures pass, you are stuck taking it to the dealer for diagnosis. Lets hope they have the smarts and know how to do so.

If they do diagnose that some parts of your air suspension need replacing, fret not, you go here for your shopping needs: VOLKSWAGON - Touareg 2004-2010 (all, w/ air suspension)

Please update if any solutions come up, this is a very interesting situation.

Probably, but if you noticed in that link I gave you, the prices are really not all that bad. You would easily be looking at 3-4X the $$$$ cost, for just, as an example, one air spring at the VW dealer. That alone from the dealer would be $2000 each off the top of my head, basically $8000 + labour+ tax, all four corners. Lucky for us though, whilst steel sprung setups must be replaced in sets of fours, usually at about $2000-$3000 for a spring/shock swap, we air suspension guys need only replace the affected corner . In that link I gave you, it is about $400+ a corner. Not bad at all.

If you need some sort of air suspension related module, and that would be a long shot if you do need one, there is some dude parting out his Touareg in the classifieds and it is a 2006 one like yours! Now that I think about it, he might be your ticket, although I am unsure of his pricing. He does supposedly live close to me, but I have not done business with him at all to offer feedback.

So you have two choices once you go to the VW dealer to diagnose for the peace of mind. Arnott industries, and that 2006 part out in the classifieds.

You are posting on a 6 year old thread and it looks like the guy never told us the outcome.....

Originally I was in Xtra height mode with 'comfort' setting. After moving away from the worst part of the rocky road I set height to off road and left in comfort. I assumed that the Xtra height was to blame but as we moved down the mountain I started messing with the settings and even in standard road mode with comfort still stiff ride. I've even noticed in comfort and standard height that small speed bumps are painful. Is it due to the age of the vehicle or is air suspension always this bad? Or at least the 04 air ride on the touareg.

There should be a noticeable difference between Extra Height and Off Road settings.

That said, does the display change when you roll the damper setting between Sport, Auto and Comfort? That switch is REALLY close to the cup holders and if it's not working due to water damage, you might be stuck in Sport mode. Just an idea....
