Air Bag Fault??

Our '08 is now about 3 weeks out of warranty, and now when we start it, it says "air bag fault" and the air bag icon stays on.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the suggestion. It does make the seat belt icon go away when I buckle up, and the air bag light stays on if I buckle up or not. The air bag light never came on when I did not use my seat belt before. I'm still not understanding how the buckle has any relation to the air bag fault light.

There is a relay that test the belt and airbag every time you you start the car and if for some reason one of them does not talk to the other it turns the air bag off and that is why the light goes on I had it in to VW services department and they charged me 100.00 to tell me it was a 500.00 seat belt harness

There was a well known fault relating to the big yellow connector under the driver's seat making a poor connection as the harness was tight.

As the seat wears and sinks a bit, or a much heavier person sits on it, the harness pulls too tight and the connection is lost bringing the airbag light on.

Once the light is on you will need VAGcom to clear it even if you make good the connection.

I believe that whilst the light is on, the airbag system will not function in an accident so it is something to get fixed ASAP!

The dealer fix was a short extension to the the harness.

A lot of Treggers have DIY'd by removing the big yellow connecting block and hard wiring the harness with an short extension to give the harness a bit of slack.

Be careful when messing with the wiring - airbags have been known to go off. Only do this work yourself if you are competent.

I paid the quivalient of $150 to get both front seats done.

Get your codes pulled to make sure. Mine ended up just being the switch in the console. 15 minutes of my time and it was fixed. Part was around 20 or 30 bucks if I remember correctly. The fault codes will narrow down your problem if not point it out directly.

What were some of the fault codes that you all were getting with the issues? I got an airbag fault on my 08 V8 recently as well. But haven't been able to find a Vag-com near by to help me can for codes, I might just invent in buying it myself. But I'd like to know which codes are related to what issues.

Edited: Just answered my own question, it seems the bad connection fault is "02511".

Do you know what codes you had for the bad switch in the console?

Yes, good point.

Sorry, I don't recall the code but it specifically mentioned the switch as the source and not the sensor in the code description. I'll try to locate the code and post it if I do though.

Don't follow that video completely - the guy takes the seat out and that is NOT necessary!!

The seat is hinged at the rear.

You remove two plastic trims at the rear of the seat to give the seat clearance for the hingeing operation.

Then you remove the two plastic plates on the floor at the front of the seat.

Then you undo the two floor bolts revealed by removing those plates and the seat hinges back giving you plenty of room to replace the battery.

BUT . . . DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UNDO THOSE TWO FLOOR BOLTS UNLESS YOU HAVE EXACTLY THE CORRECT TOOL!!

And you have seated it into the bolt head really well!!!

I'm really sorry. I meant to do this but it was serviced under "good will" and free of charge because it was so close to warranty. If this is not the PN, let me know.

Thanks for posting the part number. I did a search on that part number appears to be for the entire buckle plus connector. But do we know if they wiring is actually longer and this issue will not reoccur? $90 DIY is still cheaper than what the dealer wants to do the work.

If, when you fit the buckle, the harness feels tight, just extend the wiring yourself.

It is easy enough to do.

I had my airbag fault checked by the dealer on my 08 treg v6, and it turns out that the weight sensor inside the passenger seat went out. I crapped my pants when he told me how much it was going to be to fix. $1500.00 total for the parts and labor:(

That seems very silly money.

I would extend the yellow connector wiring and see if that clears the fault before spending that kind of money.

Even if the fault remained after extending the wiring, I would get a second opinion.

How much did that cost you?

I have another question related to the airbag sensor. I watched some idiot on youtube change his battery and he removed the seat rather than tilting it. So as I am also an idiot I did the same and disconnected the wires under the seat. Finally got the new battery in and replaced the connectors and seat but now I have the airbag warning light illuminated. My question is - when I disconnected the wires under the seat, did that cause the warning and if so does it need a VAG-COM to turn it off or will it go off by itself after a few cycles? The light was not on before changing the battery. Thanks

If it's the video I am thinking of, I asked that guy to make it clear you do not need to take the seat out, just remove the plastic trim pieces on the rear of the seat runners to enable the full rearward tilt.

Yes, you caused the fault code!

No, it will not clear itself.

Yes, you need VCDS to cancel the code.

I believe any device designed to clear fault codes (think Auto Zone, etc) will clear that fault code. However, if the erratic connection which caused the code to set continues to be erratic the code will return. The VagCom is not necessary in this case.
Try it and find out! If it doesn't work out then find someone with a VagCom. No harm will come of it.

I just spoke with my local service center who said that it sometimes clears itself after 100 miles or so. If not he would charge 1 hr labour ($100).
I have a colleague with a OBD11 reader. I could try that to clear it first.
I know I caused the fault and it is not a faulty connector.
Thanks for your replies, I will let you know the results.

No, it does not clear itself after 100 miles!

The system is designed to make you get it get it checked out as it's the key personal safety system in the car.

All the time you drive the car with the light on the airbag is disabled and will NOT operate.

[I have read conflicting views as to whether that is ALL airbags disabled or just the one the system thinks is faulty so don't delay anyway.]

And, yes, a good code reader should be able to reset it - upon reflection I recall my little local garage reset mine okay [and in 5 minutes I might add!] when identifying the issue when I had the common "yellow connector" problem, and the airbagman who actually fixed it also reset it and neither used VCDS.

I hate to disagree with Noob - he is always the man - but I work on a daily basis with airbag electronics. Not VW, other OEMs. Most airbag controllers are connected to dozens of external sensors, airbags, etc. These connections are continuously checked by the controller. If a fault is found, the airbag lamp goes on. If the fault does not recur, the lamp goes off after 10-20 ignition cycles.

More serious faults get "latched." Then the lamp stays on until you go in and clear the fault. I haven't had the occasion to do that with my VCDS so I don't know how that works on VWs.

Edit: Also, in most cases the bags will still work with the lamp on. You just can't be sure everything will operate correctly. It depends on the fault that turned the lamp on.

Airbag warning light

Update on the warning light issue after replacing the battery.

Tried a couple of OBD11 readers and could not clear the light.
Drove 150 miles and it never went off by itself.

Went to Pure Motorsports in San Diego and they turned it off in the carpark within 2 minutes.

Great place. They know what they are on about.

New issue I have is a vacuum leak on the manifold. I hear it 'squeeling' when i let off the throttle but only when the engine is hot and only the fwd top one.

Shop says the only way to cure it is to replace whe whole manifold at a cost of around $2000.

When I looked on this site I see there is a DIY repair but I would rather a shop did it.

Any recommendations on a good shop that will do it?
