I am looking to move to 17" wheels so that I can get the tire size I need for overlanding. I have the tires, and attempted to put on Method Race Wheels 701 Matte Black 17x7.5" 5x130", 50mm offset 6.2" backspace, and the caliper will fit inside the wheel, however, the caliper sticks out toward the face of the wheel too far, and without spacers, wont work.

If anyone here has suggestions on what wheels I should get, or a good method to determine what wheels will work, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Many 17s won't fit due to the caliper size in these

The clearance over the brake caliper is minimal even with VW 17" wheels - with an aftermarket brand a trial fit is absolutely essential before purchase.

The other option is to just buy a motorsport wheel designed for large opposing piston caliper clearance. Apart from the spoke clearance which is rather easy to determine. The next issue is the inner wheel diameter. On many wheels they have a 'drop center'. There are many purposes for this and it is actually a superior design if inner wheel diameter is not a concern.
Some pros of a drop center: (the first 4 points are all related)
Increased stiffness for same amount of material
Less weight (for same stiffness)
Less material needed to manufacture
Cheaper end product due to less material needed

Increased ease of tire installation (most relevant for large wheels with low profile tires)
Increased room for TPMS devices (most relevant for large wheels with low profile tires)

You'll find that on most Rally (stage rally) and Rally Raid (Dakar style) wheels they have no drop center. The inner barrel diameter is pretty much the same the whole way across. This is purely to increase brake caliper clearance so they can use the largest brake and smallest wheel possible, increasing tire sidewall height.

Perhaps VW OE 17 inch Canyon wheels? They'll fit most Touaregs, but I know they will not fit the V10 or Hybrid. I have a set I used to use for Winter driving. I have mine staged against my Touareg for a picture I took for a potential sale of the wheels.

I use the calculator at Tire Rack - they have lots of options to go up / down and their recommendations Are Accurate!
Tha offset And tire width are important
