Hi

I am in the process of buying a 2007 2.5 tdi dpf touareg. http://goo.gl/VEqzgf

I was hoping member would be able to give me a heads up on what to check before i make the purchase.

The car only has part service history but on the face of it looks in good condition, with 2 previous owners and 67k on the clock.

I have a few questions

1. Any known issues i should look out for before i make the purchase

2. It has 17 in factory rims, is there any advantage to buying bigger rims secondhand, does it make the ride more sturdy / comfortable / safer

3. At what mileage would the cam-belt usually need changing, and without a full service history, is there anyway of checking this?

4. What are the main issues that could arise and related rough costs?

Thanks in advice for any advice

Mike

Lauri,

Thank you, I know nothing about cars, does it have an equivalent, or i am spared this with the 2.5?

Any other advice?

Thanks

17" rims permits higher profile tyres which are certainly more comfortable, have a wider choice of A/T, All-Season and Winter tyres, probably sturdier but less grip at the limit. The 2.5 TDi uses 5x 120mm PCD wheels, unlike every other Touareg which uses 5x 130mm PCD.

Engines without a cambelt use a cam chain, more robust but even they don't last forever.

Ask if the center support bearing for the drive shaft has been replaced. My guess is that it has not, but it will fail at 80,000 miles. You can crawl under car and see the support bearing and from a visual inspection tell the condition. Do a search on this forum on "Center Support" and you'll find some pictures.

Next, run all the windows up and down several times and listen for any strange noises. If any of them sound like crunchy cereal, then the lift cable is about to go. They get rusty and break.

Neither of these is a reason not to buy the car - both have fixes. But it might help negotiate the price down.

This is the thread you need to sit down and read:

Buying a used Touareg. What to look for. - myTreg forums

Unless you're a lunatic, stick with 17s. Avoid 19s at all costs - poor choice of tyres and expensive too. Read the thread.

The rubber in the centre bearing has a habit of only lasting 60K or 5 years, whoever comes first. Read the thread.

The 2.5 Tdi has gears, no chain, no belt, just like the V10. Read the thread.

The biggest concern on a 2.5 is whether or not the correct engine oil has been used - even VW dealers get it wrong. Read the thread.

As for other concerns, yup, read the thread.

There are more 2.5 Tdi owners on the UK site too: the model never went to the US.
