Hi Everyone,

I have a 2014 Touareg TDI. I just bought an enclosed trailer with trailer brakes that uses the 7-way connector. The trailer has led lights. I'm aware that the connector needs to sense a load in order to power the lights.

Further, I plan to use a Curt bluetooth wireless brake controller with the touareg. I have the device but it doesn't have resistors inside to allow the car to detect the trailer. There are 7 way plugs with resistors that exist but if I double this up with the curt device it will be unweildy and dragging on the ground.

I've attempted to add resistors inside the 7-way plug. I tried 100 ohm between ground, left turn, right turn, and running lights. That did not work. I tried 50 ohm and finally 10 ohm resistors. None of these allowed the car to recognize the trailer which doesn't make sense to me. I feel like 10 ohms would draw 1.2 amps which should easily simulate an incandescent bulb. Can anyone tell me what is not sound about my logic?

Adding resistors to the 7-way seems.... interesting. Your 7P should support LED trailer lights, I've never had an issue with mine and many different trailers. Perhaps a coding change in the Trailer recognition module?

I'd get rid of the hokey resistors.

Do all 7P's work with both incandescent and LED trailer lights or just the T4's?

Same as mine, except I have newer firmware, so that may be a factor. It would be worth asking a dealer to update your module as they may not charge (very much) for it, and it might restore your functionality.

Can we talk about what you've shown in the pic?
I'm super rusty at reading resistors as I haven't played with stuff like that since highschool.... but what resistor are you showing? To me it looks like a 4.6ohm which isn't one of what you listed as having tried?

Also, are all your codes there without the resistor attempts and without anything plugged into the socket? Or only when you plug something into it?

Also, shouldn't the resistor be in series with the load? (so in line with the yellow wire for example)
Once again, I haven't played with circuits in decades, so I'm very rusty, but what you've got going on there doesn't make sense to be based on the very little that I remember. (which is barely anything)

Soot, it's a 47 ohm resistor with 5% tolerance (i.e. I called it a 50 ohm). V=IR so putting it in parallel should draw a quarter amp or so.

More updates. Found that the 15amp fuse to the trailer was blown. I was having issues with my other trailer as well which usually works fine so I believe this fuse was blown before I started messing with the trailer in question. I replaced the fuse, plugged the 7 way connector into the touareg and didn't get any lights. Only dim flickering on the tail lights and license plate lights. I believe this is the vehicle trying to sense the lights. Then.....

I unplugged and replugged the connector and the lights worked! Everything seemed to work great. Then I unplugged and replugged and I got the flickering again and no lights. I added a single 100ohm resistor to the left turn signal light and plugged it in and the lights worked. unplugged and replugged and I got the flickering again. I then added resistors to the right turn signal and tail lights and got the same behavior.

Not sure why it's not registering every time, even if I add a load to the circuit. Other thoughts are there is a 12v battery in the trailer that connects to the touareg thru the 7-way plug. This charges the battery when trailering, maybe this is interfering but I don't really think it would make a difference. Perhaps there is a proper sequence to get the trailer to register (i.e. start the car then connect trailer, or connect trailer then start car). I will play with it more tonight....

Below are pictures of the leds slightly on/flickering. Hard to see in the pics...

not sure if itll help here - but i made a quick dummy connector to disable the park sense when we have a bike rack on.
using 5w 33ohm resistors, 3 resistors one on the tail/running lights, one on left turn, and one on right turn, all run to ground
all seems well (what wattage are your resistors?)

that said, ive towed our LED light equipped boat trailer without issues so... maybe theres something else wrong on your module coding?

Also throwing in that my '14 VR6 Exec works fine with my LED trailer lights. Trailer used to have incandescent but I upgraded everything a few years ago. It still detects bulb out/poor connection issues. I had a couple of dirty pins that would sometimes throw a bulb-out (even though they were on). A cleaning and dielectric grease spray down solved that.

Hi All,

I think I figures it out. If i plug the end of the 7 way plug in without the outer sheath it works great. When i put the outer sheath around the plug and plug it in it doesn't work. I think the outer sheath is hitting the connector. I'm going to replace the 7 way plug on the trailer and hopefully that fixes it. I can plug and unplug every time and it works if I remove the outer sheath. If I add it it doesn't work. Will report back one final time if that's it. There is a set screw and it deformed the outer sheath and I think that's the issue.
