Post full scan, codes and FF data
Acquired V10 and CEL codes... what a surprise
Bought an 2006 V10 project car, 185k miles on the clock. Owner had bought it knowing that tandem pumps needed changing (passenger side leaking), never got around to it and needed to get rid of it. I actually was able to drive it the over 500 miles back to my house (over 2 days), only had to put in a little over a quart... well who knows with the stupid dipstick. Anyways, previous owner had told me there was a fuel trim code P0170 - fuel trim. When I finally got there and ran VCDS myself, the P0170 code was gone and I got two new codes:
P0252 - Injection Pump A Cam/Rotor: Range/Performance (Injection timing out of range)
P0257 - SAE - Injection Pump B Cam/Rotor: Range/Performance
Both come on as soon as I start vehicle. I cleared it a few times on my drive back only for it to come back. One time I cleared and went at least 40-50 miles before stopping - neither were pending codes before I shut off engine. It's just when I start it they pop up every time.
Only thing I can find here on this site for P0257 is this thread: P0257 on V10 TDI
Guy claims that a dirty air filter caused the code, and it went away when it was changed. I haven't even looked at the air filter to see if it's dirty, but can that really be it?
The other code is more worrisome, and the reason why I think it's worrisome is because this car has an unknown service history surrounding it. In other words, cams haven't been inspected and they might be starting to go. However, I do not hear the typical banging sound that these vehicles tend to make when the cams start to go bad. The car runs fine; true that I literally just drove this for the first time so I have no frame of reference, but it seems to accelerate fine.
Going back to P0257, the owner changed the fuel filter before selling it to me, so that's clean. I had the idea of maybe running some diesel fuel additive (Amsoil diesel injector cleaner) because it was sitting for 2 years and almost never started before I drove it the 500 miles back to my house. I use Amsoil on my other TDI (03 Golf ALH engine) and the guy who sells me Amsoil gave that to me for free, so that's why I have it.
Anybody have any experience with these codes, or would have an idea why both would show up right on startup like that? Thanks.

There's plenty of other addresses it scanned and came back with faults (like the lamps... car is yelling at me that bulbs are out every time I turn on the car but they're all working), but I included the ones that are engine relevant.
What I never understood about these scan tools is that how can a code that shows up in an address bank is a different code from what shows up when you use the OBD-II function? Because as you'll see there's the fuel trim codes that pops up in the engine addresses (that's probably what the former owner saw), and yet what pops up when you scan via OBD-II are two completely different codes... I'm confused.

I have no idea what you're going on about. Is there something in the partial information that you're asking about?
I'm asking why when I scan via OBD-II I get codes P0252 and P0257. When I do a full address scan via VCDS, those two codes don't even show up, and instead I'm getting codes P0170, P0173, and P1456. At least those are all the relevant engine codes in the address scan.

I called my local VW to see if there are any updates to ECMs available, and none such exist.
I'd suggest posting on the RT site as those guys will be way more informed than the local dealer who probably didn't even look anything up. I'm not sure if you can see firmware/software updates on erWin but it would be worth looking into it.

I once again encourage you to post a full scan.... you have lots of weirdness here.... look at the FF data.....
So your engine isn't running when the injection timing is out of range?
It's also freezing AF outside, and there's no airflow, etc..... how can ANY amount of timing be out of spec based on those parameters?
You said you drove it, so it must run....
Why are all these sensors reading zero?
So have you logged all these sensors? Are they all dead, or do they just read flaky and drop the signal when your DTCs pop or how do you explain this?
Sure thing, here's the full re-scan. I say re-scan because remember that this was sitting for 2 years. And this ECU starts doing weird things when battery discharges. It was throwing a bunch of faults for other small things, but when I cleared all the codes, cycled the engine and did auto-scan again, here's what I got:
Note that the Fuel Trim codes never went away after cycle. Neither did the Airbag on the passenger side, annoyingly. Have no clue about oxygen sensors and their status on this car, maybe I can change them out when I do tandem pumps? I know there's one for each bank of cylinders, where exactly are they located?
