ACC Front Assist Camera ongoing diag

Hey OP, you are arguing with the wrong guy. Savage is great help and a wealth of knowledge with these things. If you want to be a jerk, maybe RT will be a better avenue. You are NOT the only one with issues with the ACC. I speak from experience.

Savage doesn’t need me rescuing him. I am literally nobody here and I don’t speak for him at all. (I assume it is a guy, but could be a woman.) I found your responses to him to be argumentative for absolutely no reason. So, let me get this straight, you would prefer someone who is trying to help you (just like they do for everyone on here in the same manner) to say “pretty please”? Frankly, I am surprised he kept on after your initial refusal. I wouldn’t have. Since you joined within the past 24 hrs, I’m gonna give you a bit of a heads up with any forum. You should probably search and read. Learn how people are and show them the respect you want them to show you. The internet isn’t a great place for thin skin. I’m sure if you read the posts I have made you can see where Savage has been straight with his responses. It’s fine, I take no offense to it.

I don’t have any idea why the new camera would be giving issues, but the old camera looks to be a loss of comms with the camera to image processor. Do you live in a hot climate? In Touaregs they are known to have issues in the solder on the boards. Some people have said shaving down the video cable end so the plug sits deeper has resolved it. Step 1 for me with this issue was to try a new cable. It didn’t cure mine. I have yet to pull the camera and slide it under a microscope to inspect, but there is a company in Australia who rebuilds these due to this problem. Trying a random camera from another car I am thinking may cause issues. Don’t know for sure though.

Go to car-parts.com on a desktop style browser, click on non-interchange search, put in 15 to 17 for year, and projector camera for the part. Review descriptions for the above part number or "windshield mounted" then call or email them to check.

The place in Australia had refurb units but they're not cheap. We threw in the towel and got one of those, should be here in a week or two.

When they diagnosed your camera, what items on it specifically failed? Did they send you images of the failed parts of the board?

I covered the failures in my post above. They sent pictures of the attempted repairs I made, but nothing proving the failed processor or heat damage they claim. Perhaps there was no evidence of such, despite questioning it a couple of times.
Would you mind sharing or posting the pictures here? I plan on opening up my camera module and investigating it's condition with the electrical engineer on my team at work.

Closing this out. We ended up buying a refurbished camera from them. It was not cheap but it worked. In the end we are about $1500 into the camera and $600 for the alignment. Slight upside is we got new tires so a fresh wheel alignment was included with the ADAS calibration.

Really VW, why don't you default to standard cruise when these errors happen? I drove an older Jeep GC with a bad camera and it defaulted back to standard CC and didn't light up my dash with errors. VW service writer said a lot 9f the VWs are like that.
how about just providing the option to even change to standard cruise. I would convert to standard cruise if it was even possible.

I have yet to take my camera out and send it to Australia. That is on the plan for 1Q this year. Please let us know what the rebuilder tells you about yours. I am wondering if it is better to just buy the stuff to resolder the boards at home or what. I'm also intrigued to find a local electronics repair company who does flip chip floating.

It is odd that the only others I feel like are discussing this issue were sedans, maybe the s8 or s7 crowd? In fact, back at the beginning of this thread I believe that's what I sourced my test camera from. Haven't found any mention of Cayan e or Q7 owners.

I'm in no hurry to go through the pain of this camera system and the potential argument over getting it repaired if so. None the less I did email Australia to ask their advice.
I think even the Australian company refers to the issue being heat related don't they? Well, it has not exactly been blistering hot lately so it is very odd that this is causing you issues again.

They definitely attributed heat to the failure of the original camera. However, I heard back from them and they were very receptive and said the 0161 is very likely the camera module and to send it back in and they will recheck and repair . Stated they have some improved procedure for repairing these since the last time. Aside from the the cost of shipping, this is nice to hear it won't be a hassle, and hopefully a better fix.
That is great to hear they have good customer service. Seems so rare these days. Please let us know if the outcome when they get you repaired. I am looking forward to sending mine to them and having it repaired. It's the final piece of the puzzle to making my Touareg function like factory.

Let me know how the repair goes as well.

Is anyone interested in a group repair order?

As an aside I do plan to remove the camera and look at it with my wife's inspection microscope. Just too cold out right now.

Thanks...
I have yet to be able to figure out how to ship my camera to them. They are of very little help with shipping info and the cost to ship to Australia is almost 50% if the cost of their repair. Seems pretty ridiculous.

How's the Houston heat this summer treating your repair?
Ironically, it did fine through all summer. Now that we have a bit of cooler weather hitting us, it failed. So strange. It went nuts in the early morning hours today when I hit the horn for someone cutting me off. Right then, the camera faulted and came back. Parked it in our parking garage the entire day and on the commute home when it was in the low 80's outside or maybe even high 70's, it faulted again and won't come back (even with clearing the fault on VCDS).

I'm glad you can laugh because I'm sure you'd otherwise cry. That is insane! I'm in Corpus and was complaining to my husband this morning that both Houston and Lafayette (my hometown in LA) have seen the 60s, but we haven't. I guess maintaining blistering heat is a factor after all! I just sent mine off to Speedometer Solutions yesterday and one of my big concerns is that my husband insists our 3 car garage isn't meant to house vehicles, unless they are being worked on of course, and the treg baking in the sun will just result in the camera failing again.
I opted to have the chip replaced, which the specs say the operating temp is 100C, but I'm guessing housed in that metal case, the heat is just amplified even more.
Sorry to hear it has failed.
I store my Touareg outside in the Houston heat everyday. It regularly sees temperatures of 100F and the surface feels even hotter since it is a dark color. We don't park in our garage either. There is not much you can do other than laugh. It is crazy to me the that the camera sh!t the bed when I layed on my horn this morning around 6am when someone was cutting me off pretty bad. It just went haywire right then. It came back to life and the errors flickered on and off for a moment then it was fine. After letting it sit in the parking garage at work it was fine and then on the commute home it went out. It's not even hot out today that's the crazy part. It's frustrating to say the least, but at least it happened while under warranty. I just hope they make good on their warranty. Please let me know how your experience with Speedometer Solutions goes.
