3L TDI / CATA / CNRB - VCDS chain stretch

24134 Views 231 Replies 47 Participants Last post by  SaVAGeSoot
This post might just break this forum, as just about anyone I've ever met with a 3L TDI wants some sort of ability to check the potential doom of their timing chain skipping.

Edit:
Since there aren't too many users reporting values at the moment, I will keep updating the table for now to provide an easy to read reference.

The following information is what I've learned from reading way too many posts on the subject.

I strongly suggest that anyone with the ability to post their own details contributes to this so that we can come up with some consensus of potential feasibility.

Here are my values.
CNRB with ~150k (km)
I don't have any noticeable rattle or noise concerns.
You want your engine warmish fully warmed up before taking the reading.
Address 01: Engine (7P0 907 401 K)

19:10:21
IDE00021 Engine RPM 713 /min
IDE00025 Coolant temperature 61º C
IDE00182 Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position -4.15º
IDE00196 Engine oil temperature 59.1º C
You're interested in the adaptation value. Ideally, it's zero, but as your chains wear, they will get noisy and once you get around -8 to -9 you can expect a failure. At that point you should have a significant amount of rattle, especially on cold startups.

People with short OCIs and quiet chains report being around the -5 value at about 100-120k miles.

Post your details and let's see if there's any truth to these rumors!

@C-ya
Can you post this section from your autoscan? I have a suspension.
(here's a sample from my scan)
Sure.

Code:
Address 01: Engine (CAT) Labels: None

I was right... there's your issue.
There's no label file for your controller.

Will do. Looks simple enough. I have a few other modules with no label file so I'll send them as well.
OK, looking at a different, later log file, I see this:

Code:
Address 01: Engine (CAT) Labels:. 059-907-401-CAT1.clb
   Part No SW: 7L0 997 401 HW: 7L0 907 401 K

I'll do another scan and see what it shows. The first one was right after I bought the Treg and the VCDS cable - 10/20. This one was 8/21.

New label files are included in the latest releases.
Make sure your interface firmware and VCDS software are up to date.
That must be what happened. Someone must have submitted some files and they updated VCDS. As of my 8/21 scan, I had 3 modules with no label. I'll rescan and if I have any without labels, I'll submit them. I have 22.3.1 installed.
info for the list

'12 CATA
recent purchase but according to the carfax the OCI was in the ~10k realm most recently
has 126k miles on it now
no idle rattle

If I think about this tomorrow, I will share what a 2000 mile set of chains on a CATA looks like. Mine went 401000 before I changed my chains

Here’s mine: 2013 Q7 - 101,743 miles

IDE00021 Engine RPM 680/min
IDE00025 Coolant temperature 85º C
IDE00182 Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position -2.9º
IDE00196 Engine oil temperature 83.3º C

My oil service interval has been ~7,500 miles during my ~27k miles of ownership. Not sure what it was beforehand.

400K miles on a 7P CATA ? that is encouraging. Are you the original owner?
2014 Touareg CNRB

118 ,500 miles

liquimoly top tec 5w30w 4200 every 7500 miles

VALUES :
Intermittent classic rattle at start up.... at times, some times sounds like a slight tick tick tick ... slight ...goes away immediately after start up , all the normal stuff 😂

Coolant temperature =91.5C
Oil temperature. = 95.5 C
Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position = - 2.59 degrees

-this has already been noted I’m sure but the value changes with rpm /load
The values ranges from -2.59 at 760 rpm to
-3.34 at 2295 rpm

-I have also noticed that while idling ... warmed up coolant and engine oil temps go up a bit and when running / rolling they go down a little of course

Here is a nice chart I made with rpm and the degree figure
The degree # fluctuates with rpm

And this tells us what?
All it tells us is that the degree value range depends on rpm and there is a direct correlation here

So I have a lot of Erwin manuals
I just came across this document
-although technically our engines are not listed .... it explains IDE00182 which is the figure we have been measuring .... Also mentioning other values
