3L TDI / CATA / CNRB - VCDS chain stretch

22880 Views 224 Replies 44 Participants Last post by  SaVAGeSoot
This post might just break this forum, as just about anyone I've ever met with a 3L TDI wants some sort of ability to check the potential doom of their timing chain skipping.

Edit:
Since there aren't too many users reporting values at the moment, I will keep updating the table for now to provide an easy to read reference.

The following information is what I've learned from reading way too many posts on the subject.

I strongly suggest that anyone with the ability to post their own details contributes to this so that we can come up with some consensus of potential feasibility.

Here are my values.
CNRB with ~150k (km)
I don't have any noticeable rattle or noise concerns.
You want your engine warmish fully warmed up before taking the reading.
Address 01: Engine (7P0 907 401 K)

19:10:21
IDE00021 Engine RPM 713 /min
IDE00025 Coolant temperature 61º C
IDE00182 Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position -4.15º
IDE00196 Engine oil temperature 59.1º C
You're interested in the adaptation value. Ideally, it's zero, but as your chains wear, they will get noisy and once you get around -8 to -9 you can expect a failure. At that point you should have a significant amount of rattle, especially on cold startups.

People with short OCIs and quiet chains report being around the -5 value at about 100-120k miles.

Post your details and let's see if there's any truth to these rumors!

Thank you for doing this. I look forward to posting mine when I get the car back from the body shop next week. Was rear ended 40 days after I bought the car🙄

That sucks.... sorry to hear. Hope you're OK (both physically and emotionally) :sneaky:

Anyone else out there with a TDI who wants to post their stats?

I will as soon as I can, maybe this weekend. 102K on mine for reference. On previous car 137K miles with no sign of chain stretch or any noise whatsoever but I never documented anything via Vag-com.

Remind how I read these? I have not used VAG-COm in so long I need some direction.

Thanks

Select engine controller, advanced measuring blocks, and select from the list the different blocks as per list above. Then hit save and copy/paste text from log file saved

I had a look at the measuring blocks information (3.0 CASA 7L) but can't see which block number gives this information?

)

Mine is a CASA engine but this information should still be available, do you have the actual number of the measuring block to select?

Go into advance measuring blocks and there should be a list with many IDExxxx that comes up. There is a search bar at the top where you can type the number as shown in my log or the word that interests you (for example camshaft)
Then you add checks besides each of values you want displayed.

Let me know if that works for you.

I'll have a look tomorrow. I was in there but may have missed it.
It's common to use vag com with the 2.0 TSI to check for chain stretch also but it's a different method. I'll see if I can do this in a little bit
Yes, on gassers you look at MVBs 91 and 93 or something for something like a 3deg spread... But no one cares because we are concerned with our oil burners instead.
Nothing. I do not have those parameters to check on mine. I have been through it several times and cannot find those measurement blocks at all.

Mine does NOT come up like this:

Loc. does not show IDE..... Just 029.... etc. No camshaft values at all.

Screenshot or it didn't happen. Are you using genuine VCDS or some clone?

I may be in the same boat with my '08 7L, can you check if you have UDS protocol?
