It's a gasser with a different type of engine.... it shares nothing with the engine in question.
Might as well answer with lots of engines make it past the 300k mile mark.... just as relevant.

Disagree, I didn't answer with " My scirocco had 786k miles on it". I was giving an example from the same T1 with a different engine. Shows the build quality in these cars. Plus The TDI is more durable, so if my V8 made it to 225k on still running a properly maintained V10 should do 300k no prob.

So… my V6 gas tranny had worked great for many years, until my wife started regularly driving the Touareg… then odd issues… so at 93k I replaced fluid with a replacement fluid from Pentosin designed specifically for the VW spec… then things really got odder.. so now with 104k, I have issues with the vehicle in cold weather. Tranny will not go into gear until warm enough… my mechanic claimed that he needed to drill some of the pan bolts in order to remove the pan and change the gasket and filter, but the added labor brought the cost of the job to nearly $1000… Ouch! I am not happy with that service! I never had these problems with cold-weather when factory fill fluid was in place. It would tend to indicate that whatever Pentosin is selling ain’t the right thing for our vehicles, especially a 2004.

Everyone be aware of your fluid choice because clearly there’s been some variation over the last 20 years in what’s actually going into the bottle …

You clearly need a different mechanic!
The transmission service on a 6spd has been well documented all over the forums.... even if you pay someone to do it, it should not cost anywhere close to that, even if they snap some bolts.
The fact that you are now having problems indicates that he's butchered it badly.... I'd pay to have it redone by someone properly before you fry things up and need to replace components.

he may have lied!… don’t know as I’ve simply had other fish to fry… he’s an experienced European high end Porsche/BMW mechanic and works on these vehicles as his stock in trade. Had a great relationship but apparently it’s soured…

that is a smidge over 200K miles.
My 2007 T2 has done 425k km (dunno what that is in archaic measure - since these measures were based on the King's foot, do you guys use Trump's over there now?). Original everything, DPFs cleaned at 300k, air suspension just changed over to Bilsteins. Great touring car, none of the 'modern' tech (e.g. touchscreen rubbish). If only VW had designed it to take off-road accessories it would be the perfect all-round package.
