I am in the process of changing the engine in my 2005 T-reg. I purchased a used engine that supposedly has 80k miles on it. Judging from the dirt and sludge in the intake manifold and in the valve train I am doubting the millage on the engine. Anyways my plan was to change the timing chains before I put the used engine back in but the chains are tight with no play and I cannot see any wear on the upper chain guide. There is also two red marks pained on the camshaft markings which leads me to believe the chains might have been recently replaced. Does anybody have any advice, what to look for or anyway of knowing if the Timing chains are original or if they have been changed?

The chain tensioners work by hydraulic oil pressure so unless the motor is running the chain is not at operating tension. Not certain if you can tell by feel if the chain is good. Is the chain tensioner new? Not certain but the paint could be from manufacture of engine or new upper chain. Would expect to see some wear on the guides with the mileage so hard to know. Would replace the guides chain and tensioner unless someone knows how to determine chain elongation without a running engine and a scan of measuring blocks 208 and 209.

I decided to replace the chains since I already had purchased them. When I took off the top timing cover I found one of the bolts holding the chain guide was loose and just hanging there. After taking it apart I found a chunk of the engine block had broken off where the bolt screws int o the cylinder head. I am wondering if anybody has seen that before? Can this be welded and a new hole drilled and threaded with a helicoil? Not happy with the purchase of this used engine at all and I have requested a refund through Ebay so will see what happens. Attached are pics of what I found two pics show the piece missing and the other pics are from my old engine with the normal threads.
