I upgraded the Maps on my Launch edition today after finding the site below. The upgrade itself took about 50 minutes. The map version went from 2018.3 to 2020.3

I just left the ignition on and turned the auto lights off and let it run.

Update, had the car looked at by VW whilst getting it serviced, they couldn't update the maps either and is now booked in again so VW tech support can help them wipe/install new firmware and maps. I have seen a few other Launch editions with the same problem and wondering if they ever got their's sorted?

Thanks Hogies, this is good information.I have still been trying to update with no luck. My car isn't due for a service until late October. Please let us know how your go, so I have some knowledge before I front them. In an earlier post I said my media player wasn't working either but that was just me being stupid, I had the usb and sd both in the car so the media player was just waiting for me to tell it which one to use.

Update, Vw dealer had my Touareg Launch for 4 days trying to get the maps to update. Success, the dealer informed me today that they have spent 4 days with tech support and finally got it updated. So it was not something that I had done but rather a module or something blocking the update (I don’t think the dealer knew what was going on) apparently car was worked on remotely from VW.

Same for me yesterday. Dealer updated system software, old version 2499 now 2838, and then the maps but unable to do so via sd or usb. Don't know how they connected to the car but they said they had to do a direct laptop hard drive to car hard drive connect to get it all working again.

Just completed the latest update. I inserted the SD card, correctly formatted and loaded with the 2 files. I copied them directly out of the zip file onto my SD card. When I inserted the card and followed the instructions the screen spent a long time searching for the data unsuccessfully. I removed the card and shut off the AC and also the 'ignition'. Inserting the card and switching ignition on (only), the update went through immediately I selected 'update software'. It seems the AC being on affected the update. Perhaps if I had started the engine it would have gone through with the AC on as well, due to higher voltage.
Anyway, this might help somebody having problems.

Hi Steve
Are you showing the latest software code 2838 on your system?. I still haven't updated my maps, as the dealer couldn't update my software version (2648) due to, what they said, was a module failure in the radio area. A replacement being installed next week and then hopefully the map update will work.

@ Steve, version 2499 was the factory loaded version on Launch.
From experience dealers don't update versions unless you have issues or you ask.

I asked VW Castle Hill to update firmware and maps at the 2nd Service (30,000 km). On the day they said that there was both a firmware update and a map update but it would take them 5 hours to upload it. I told them that it didn't take that long for me to download the map update from the VW website. So I took it again last Friday and they did the update, but could not tell me what the firmware update fixed, nor could they give me any information about the map update. Once again I left thinking that they don't know anything about Touaregs.

Previously, I had successfully updated the maps from the SD slot, but after that, I could not get further updates to load. I tried many different SD cards and formatted them.

I am wondering if it is worth gathering our experiences and letting VW know that the Australian Service is not satisfactory. Premium Cars need premium answers.

Hi all, this has been a very helpful thread and I have finally had the issue resolved with my Nav database update.

I believe the issue is around some bugs in 'older' System Software and the Dealer Service Advisor also said this. The current software version is 2838.

When I first received my 2021 Treg I easily updated the Navigation database following the excellent instructions at the start of this thread (thanks @DCTouareg2019)

There had been a slight delay in sourcing parts to fit my TowBar fit at the dealer and this was subsequently completed and as I have mentioned elsewhere they did a fabulous job and even the remote tailgate lift continued to work as it should.

Late last year, I tried another Nav System database update and it failed miserably and my experience was the same as others here where the update simply did not start. I was using the same SD card and Computer as I did with the previous update. I even tried various other SD cards. To that end I did wonder whether either software updates associated with the TowBar fitment or perhaps 'older' System software was 'buggy'.

Anyway, I had Max booked in two days ago, last Thursday to have a small broken bracket replaced under warrantee. When I made this booking, I spoke to the Service advisor Jonathon Zaronias about this common issue around updating the Nav Database. He spoke to their Senior Technician and later advised that he was aware of this particular issue and was confident in fixing it.

According to Jonathon they connected Max to the some server (or other such gobblygook) in Germany. Luckily Max still speaks German, unlike his owner who can only manage "Ein Bier bitte"!
After this connection was established and Max enjoyed catching up with some of his Germanic brothers and sisters in a Covid free environment while online, the amazing specialists at Sydney City Volkswagen updated his system software and the Nav Database to the latest version.

All is now well in our world.

I have mentioned elsewhere on this forum about how fantastic Sydney City Volkswagen (1024 Botany Rd., Botany) are. We got our first Treg back in 2013 and have had some interesting experiences with other dealers as have many of you all. These Technicians and Jonathon certainly exceed my expectations in all respects.
If you are having issues with your Touareg or just simply want your vehicle properly cared for, this place is worth a loooong drive or even an overnight stay in Sydney.

I have absolutely no affiliation with this business or anyone who works there.

I have attached before and after photographs of my System Information screen.

I support your comments re Sydney City VW. I purchased my Touareg from them back in Dec 2021 and found their very professional approach refreshing. They seemed to have people that actually understand the car. Unfortunately they are 150km's from my home base, so now rely on local dealer for most issues and cant say the same understanding exists here.
I finally had my software updated this week, after an issue with a module was fixed. I must say it was a battle to convince them that -
1.I hadn't created the issue by uploading some foreign software or had somehow done so by trying to do map updates myself. (regardless that I had already successfully done so previously)
2.It was up to me to convince them my software was out of date (thanks to guys on this forum) and maybe it should already have been updated in a service carried out late last year.

Following the update, they asked if I could do the latest map update myself, as they were running out of time! Took me less than 30mins once I got the car home. My system screen now matches yours.

@GazzaK thanks for this post. I can confirm that my 2020 Treg now matches the same firmware and map versions. I guess we now wait to see if the next map update will load from an SD card.

I have not been anywhere to see if the Sydney Motorways like the M1 and M4 are in the new map update.

Has anyone got any insight into what was fixed/improved with the firmware update?
